Blade isn’t your average tortoise. When his Mom, Iris Peste, found Blade struggling to move around she quickly took him to the vet. Blade was diagnosed with a metabolic bone disorder that caused his limbs to become so weak he could no longer hold himself up. His vet, Dr. Carsten Plischke, decided to take tortoise-wheelchair-making matters into his own hands. By using some of his son’s legos, Blade was fashioned a makeshift wheelchair. The wheels will help the tortoise move around while his legs gain the strength they need to hold him up once more.

“For people there are walkers, rollators or prostheses but for animals there are no companies that produce something like that,” Dr. Plischke says. “The size variation of animals means they can’t establish uniform products. So you have to come up with creative solutions; every animal needs its own treatment.” Blade is one lucky tortoise to have a vet as creative as Dr. Plischke and a mom who loves him no matter what.

Blade’s vet, Dr. Carsten Plischke, had to get creative to help the little guy out.

Good thing some of his son’s legos were hanging around and he could fashion a wheel chair for the disable tortoise.

The wheels will help Blade get around as he regains strength in his legs.

For now, Blade is the coolest tortoise in Germany with his red and black fashion statement.
