Pembient - Bioengineered Wildlife Products
"We are leveraging advances in biotechnology to fabricate wildlife products, such as rhino horn and elephant ivory, at prices below the levels that induce poaching. Our goal is to replace the illegal wildlife trade, a $20B black market, the fourth largest after drug, arms, and human trafficking, with sustainable commerce."
Poaching Crisis In South Africa
"South Africa is viewed as the primary custodian of Africa's rhinos. With 18,796 white rhinos and 1,916 black rhinos as of last estimates at the end of 2010, this represents approximately 93% and 40% of the total white and black rhino populations respectively. In recent years poaching levels have soared, and the current crisis is creating debates worldwide about the best way to tackle illegal poaching."
"The two African rhino species - black rhino and white rhino - have both increased in number in recent years thanks to successful conservation efforts, especially in South Africa. However, both species are again at risk due to a huge surge in poaching to meet demand for illegal rhino horn, primarily in Asia."
