Description
This artist's impression shows the orbits of three of the closest known stars to the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way (marked with a red cross). Analysis of data from ESO’s Very Large Telescope and other telescopes hint that the orbits of these stars show the subtle effects predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. One of those predictions is that stars will follow a slightly different path on each orbit. This is shown in the final close-up for the closest star, known as S2.
