A little while ago my good friend Chris Riley sent me a picture on instagram and asked if it was real. What I was looking at was really strange, it looks like a mash up between a regular coke can and a plastic bag?
So for today's experiment, were going to see if we can dissolve the outside of coke can and see if there actually is a plastic bag on the inside of the can.
Were going to add some sodium hydroxide to a beaker of water to dissolve the aluminum can When we mix this solution it actually gives off heat as an exothermic reaction. For our Coke Can experiment we sanded off the paint on the outside to get to just the aluminum underneath.
After watching a steve spangler video I learned that the process of putting a plastic liner in cans has been going on since 1934
And the reason for this is that the carbonic acid and other ingredients in the soda would react with the aluminum if there were no liner and make the drink taste metallic, not to mention thats really bad for you!
