I left my history classroom and headed for room 119, which housed my math class and, hopefully, news about what had happened to Phoenix. It had only been about two days since I had realized that she wasn't coming to school this week. She hadn't even left a note or texted anyone I knew about it. At first, I had assumed that she had just been sick or had other urgent business to attend to. But then I had remembered Mrs. Dawn.
The little snippets Phoenix had told me about the orphanage owner just made my suspicions grow by the hour, until I was willing to ask anyone who had ever seen Phoenix walking through the school.
Another factor that had been nagging at my thoughts for a few weeks now was the creepy messages that someone was leaving for Ember and I.
Just then, Ember burst out of a door across the hall and nearly bowled me over.
"There you are, Allie!" she cried. "I'm so glad I found you! I've been looking everywhere for you!" She suddenly lowered her voice and pulled beside a closed locker. "I'm worried about Phoenix. Do you know where she is?" I shook my head slowly, and Ember looked as if she would burst into tears. I felt the same way.
But I composed myself enough to tell my friend my hunches about Phoenix.
"I was hoping you wouldn't say that." Ember told me forlornly.
"Well, there is something else, but..."
"What? What?? Please Allie, you need to tell me. Now!" She aklmost shouted when I paused.
"Okay, okay. There was something I saw. Almost like a flashback... But there wasn't anything I recognized in it. Unless..." I breathed, waiting for Ember to inquire what I would say next. But she didn't, so I continued. "When the...vine-things came into my room, I felt like someone was telling me to touch them, so I did. Suddenly, it felt like my whole room was disappearing.
"Then, I was like...like I was inside someone else's head. She was a fairy, i guess. She had really bad anger issues. And I'm pretty sure she was named Storm or something like that. Wait...what's wrong, Ember?"
A look of terror had seized her face.
"I-I need to call my mom. Right now." She replied. "Her name is storm."
