I am so sorry about my absence. I hope this chapter makes it up. ;3 I did a lot of stuff this summer: art camp, taking care of and then having to sell a horse, having to take care of our dog who we found out has cancer... it's been a rather depressing summer. Well, I hope this school year is better and I would really appreciate your support. Anyway, enough about me. What wild adventures have River and Nora gotten into this time...???
River woke up, rubbing her eyes. She turned over in the bunk bed and leaned over the side. Miles was fast asleep, like a baby, his brown hair hanging over his face. She giggled, but clasped her hands to her mouth. Don't act like some lovesick teenager, she told herself sternly.
But she had become one more everyday. She had come to generally like Miles, not just as a friend. Her encounters with him before had hinted at that. After all, Nora liked Randy, or at least Randy liked her. Why couldn't River like someone?
She sighed and pulled out her phone, tucking her rich, pastel-red hair behind her back. It tickled her wings. Her parents had called the night before, but she wasn't looking to call them back yet. She pulled up her messages and texted Nora, basically asking her where she was. Nora didn't respond. After all, it was Sunday morning, she would be asleep.
By the time the sun was nearly high in the sky and the afternoon was just starting, River was waiting outside her dorm, leaning on the door. Across the way, the teachers had recently installed a new porch. They removed the hall opposite and let the students walk from the opposing door straight onto a high hotel-like balcony. River hadn't tried it yet, so she took a few cautious steps over.
Down below, the view of the courtyards and school. Up above, endless sky.
She held in a shaky breath. It was endless beauty. The wind rustling her wings, the warm sunlight... the promise of freedom. She stood there stunned... she slowly lifted up her wings. She wanted to catch the air, wanted to fly away...
"Hey!" someone said behind her. She turned around in a jolting jump. Behind her was Amber, her face red as she knocked on River and Miles' dorm door. She hadn't been talking to River, it seemed.
"Miles! Open up! I wanna talk to you!"
"Nice that you aren't drunk," said River quietly.
Amber whipped around. "What are you doing here?!" she spat a few curse words.
River flinched. She liked her better drunk, now that she thought about it. When she drank booze, she was friendlier. River guessed that the meaning of clique was blurred when she was drunk, in a sense that she saw everyone as a friend. River couldn't exactly explain it.
Miles opened the door. "Hey, Hano." he said.
Amber blushed fiery red. River turned back to the porch and leaned over it, her upper body draped over the edge. She sighed. She didn't bother listening to the conversation behind her... there was no need to.
"HEY! RUSE!" said a spit-fire voice behind her, and she felt two hands push her forward, off the porch.
