Hi, what grade are you in? Anyways, the square root of 4 is 2. Let me explain to you what a square root is. You see, square roots are similar to division. Let's take 9 for example, now, what two numbers multiply into 9. 3? Right, see, 3 x 3 = 9. And, the square root of 16 is, 4, right? Well, because, 4 x 4 equals 16. Those two numbers equal 16. And lets say, maybe you think the square root of 16 is 8, but that can't be possible because 8 x 2 = 16. Sure, that's correct, but are 8 and 2 the same numbers, do they equal the same? Of course not! 4 and 4 are the same numbers, that's why they equal 16. So, the square root of 4 is 2, because, again, 2 numbers equal 4? 2!

Another way to describe it-

Square roots are the opposites as exponents. Exponents are a number multiplied by itself a certain number of times. Exponents are also the little numbers in the corner. 42 is an exponent, it means 4 x 4. Since 4 x 4 = 16, then 42 = 16.

Now, square roots mean the opposite. A square root looks like a check.  √4 means the square root of four, or 4 ÷ *number* = *same number*. Now, square roots are hard to explain without knowledge of exponents, but the square root of 4 is 2 because four divided by 2 equals also 2.

Substituting numbers for variables (letters), a ÷ b = b.

It is 2 since there are two 2´s in 4

I'm sorry, but if you don't know what a square root is, then why are you you asking us, and not your teacher? Or are you just someone who takes advantage of everyone on KT and lets everyone else do you homework for you, while you just sit there and watch the magic happen? I do not mean to sound disrespectful in any way, it kind of sounds weirder than it does in my head when I type this.
