chapter five
the vet
Freya had to wait six days for help. So on October twenty-ninth, Freya went into the Tomblins' house for the first time in two months.
Thank goodness I'm safe, thought Freya as she went into the kitchen to eat. Her friend Sally was there, too. Hands clamped down on Freya and lifted her off the ground and put her in a pet carrier. Madison locked the door. Freya sat still until Madison left the room. Behind her, Sally coughed and coughed and coughed.
At nine o'clock, Freya was loaded into Madison's car, Winifred.
An hour later, they had arrived at a small brown building.
''We have arrived at the place that's going to help you.'' called Madison from the driver's seat.
Yes. thought Freya. Brandon called the vet and told them what was going on.
A few minutes later, a woman with poofy brown hair pulled back in a ponytail came out of the wooden building. The woman lifted Freya's carrier and carried her inside. The sound of barking was the first thing to emerge from the building. Lots and lots of barking. the woman gave Freya a bath. Every time her face got into the water, she would cough when her face got out of the water.
