IM STILL SO MAD ABT WHAT HAPPENED TODAY

okay so basically it was the end of the day and this dude who we can call Lina (it's a personal reference) said he would show me a pic of something I was asking Abt and then some random seventh grader was there (who wasn't even where she was supposed to be) and asked "is that your gf?" SHE DOES IT TO LITERALLY EVERYONE IT'S SO ANNOYING and I say "Ew, no!" bc that's all I need to say like it wasn't THAT deep and Lina basically said no and called me fat. the b word, a blackie, and ugly. Everyone started laughing (except my friend who was nearby, ofc)

so I got mad, and when I get mad I can't think properly so I start hitting him and he runs and I lowk just chase him around campus. Then Lina stopped and hid behind my bb coach and I told him what Lina had called me and he just told ME to stop chasing him. I went back to my friend and the other two people who were there (his supposed "cousin" which Lina keeps claiming and the seventh grader) said "bro that was wrong you shouldn't have done that why did you do that?" Okay, I KNOW hitting people is wrong. And I KNOW my anger isn't an excuse for that, so I can agree that part of this is my fault. But they kept defending him as I got to the front gate and it was so annoying bc I js KNOW they would be laughing harder if he was hitting me.

it's been weighing on me since I got home I js wanted to tell someone. thoughts on the situation?

swifties, we need to talk abt tfop.

im sorry im gonna ramble because i have so much to say. but i'll get straight into the point: IT DOESNT REPRESENT HAMLET WELL AT ALL, and as a genuine member of the hamlet fandom, im VERY mad abt it >:(

lemme explain

Ophelia in the original play showcases the life women had in that time period; she didn't have any agency or her own beliefs because she was sheltered and controlled by the men in her life. Her whole life is revolved around her relationships with her father, brother and lover. Shakespeare intentionally wrote all the conversations Ophelia had with these men to be in a masogynistic and sexualizing manner, to show that she was never considered an equal and the oppressiveness women faced, especially in that time period. She was considered a pawn for the men and kings in their game of court politics and was meant to entirely obey them. In the play, she’s driven to madness after Hamlet rejects her and kills her father, and is clearly displayed as overwhelmed, with the only person who ever cared about her, her brother Laertus, in a frantic rivalry with her unrequited lover. She then commits suicide, and the guilt of Laertus having warned her about Hamlet having a different but equally heavy toll of its own.

Taylor interprets this as a one sided tragic love story where Ophelia dies heartbroken because of the rejection and betrayal from her loved one. Hence, by finding someone who loves her wholeheartedly and is committed to her, saves her from the fate of Ophelia where she might have drowned in sadness due to the failure of her past relationships.

But in the play, Ophelia's suicide represents her very first true decision made on her own. It's about reclaiming of her personal agency. The tragic demeanor of Ophelia’s death stems from the fact that outside forces were fully responsible for her suffering and she was powerless and voiceless to resist them. Even in death, her fate is reinterpreted by other people. Ophelia's suffering would have continued even if Hamlet or another guy married her because her true escape wasn't finding love, it was having her own autonomy and identity.

Taylor, a powerful billionaire, famously known for expressing her emotions through her music would have never suffered the same fate as Ophelia, a passive, oppressed woman stuck in the patriarchy with no personal agency. So Taylor trying to reframe herself as Ophelia, a damsel in distress, who's rescued by meeting a good man (Travis) is a reductive, and frankly stupid way to interpret the story. Ophelia's suffering came from the oppression of men, so another man could never be her salvation.

It's very obvious that Taylor either didn't read Hamlet, understand any of the themes in the play, or use the correct reference for the Fate of Ophelia. It kind of seems like she might have wrote the song as love story first and then put Ophelia and Hamlet because it's Shakespeare and she wanted to give an operatic and folk-ish energy for the album. The song itself might have worked if she hadn't used Ophelia as the template and instead created her own character.

The Lumineers, on the other hand, protrayed Ophelia in a perfectly respectable way. They used her as a metaphor to protray how they felt fame was suffocating them, which I feel is perfectly reasonable, even if they don't completely explain her role in Hamlet. And the Ophelia music video isn't meant to be bubblegum pop like Taylor's is. It's dreary, rainy, with an overwhelming aesthetic of loneliness: exactly how Ophelia would have liked to be represented, as I choose to believe. Not to mention the effort that Wesley Schultz put in that Taylor Swift did not. For instance, in an interview for the podcast Sound Exploder, he clearly states that he read and studied Hamlet because even though the song wasn't completely about the story because he felt it would've been wrong to not be loyal to at least a few of the themes of the play. Not to mention how mindful they were when it came to actually using the song title 'Ophelia', because the 60s' band, humorously named The Band also made a song called Ophelia and the Lumineers tried everything else they could to not use the name, but nothing else stuck. They

Taylor Swift's effort into the heritage and history of Ophelia doesn't even slightly match the Lumineers'.

If she wanted to interpret Ophelia in a song, she could have used it to write about the oppression she might have faced from powerful men in the industry throughout her career. Having to go through massive cancellation in 2019 when it was the actions of Kanye West that led to her downfall. Or having to fight for the rights to her own albums due to the actions of powerful men in the industry, Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta who she trusted like a father. She could even write about her fans and the public, how it feels like they are controlling, judging and sheltering her every move, making her own life feel as though she has no agency to make her own decisions, or she could've sung about the effect that the fame had on her, like the Lumineers did. But noooooooooo she had to completely dismiss the themes of suffocation and remold the poetic, tragic love story into something that completely betrays it!!

thank you for reading my rant
