Chapter 6

Ada dives behind the chest, hoping whatever group comes in here leaves.

“OH MY GOSH. GUYS! GET OVER HERE!”

Several more footsteps near the door, along with several gasps.

“A mini boss door? And it's open? Who went in here?”

The same snarky voice says, “Who cares? They are probably dead, since if they managed to sneak past the guards, they probably only have stealth based skills.”

The soft voice sounds out, “That's who I'm worried about. If they have stealth based skills, Then they probably have sneak attacks.”

You… are… in ssso… much vrouble…

IM VERY MUCH AWARD OF THAT!

I cant… kill… vesssseee…guysssss. Vey are much…too…sstrong.

I think I got that.

The door creaks open. They crouch further down.

“Huh? There is no one in here.”

“There is a chest. Let's go see if they left something behind!”

Footsteps rush to their location, and they prepare to jump on top of the person, then out the door.

Vat… plan isss… sstupid… vey are an… entire grade…. Above… you… vey most likely…. Have a higher… agility score than…. You.

You got a better plan?

Yesss… attack.

NOPE.

Wh-

NO. You just fought a mini boss. Our mana is probably low, and we can't fight at least four people who are higher in level than us. And you stated they are way too strong.

Very… good…

YOU APPROV-

Shush.

“Guys, there is nothing in the chest. We should probably leave.”

“No. Whoever killed the mini boss is probably here, judging by the stench.”

“I was wondering what that smell was.”

“Okay then bossy pants.”

Footsteps echo from around the room, and they pull up their knees to keep from being spotted. D-stroy clearly disapproves, judging by the not happy emotions they are sending.

A person comes into view. She was bending over, searching the ground with such intensity that it should burn up at a glance if things worked like that. Long blonde hair falls and swishes with her side to side motions, and blue eyes glimmer with concentration. She couldn't be older than 20.

HEY. YOU. SNAP… OUT OF IT… you are …gonna get spotted…. Prepare… to… run.

Ada watches the human inspect the place, when they freeze as somebody grabs them, and tosses them out from behind the chest.

They barely manage to block a tanned fist with Destructive Claws. Green eyes glimmer with hate.

Uh oh.

“GUUUYS. I FOUND THE PERPE-”

They attempt to punch him. He sways, and backs up a few steps, but nothing else. Icicles appear above them, and they roll to the side.

D-stroy sends Ada a mental image of eating popcorn.

Ada gets up, taking a punch to the face.

"An Amalgamation? What the heck is that? I don't think this thing even uses light! And it's clearly not a bird."

Ada watches the buzz cut guy who revealed them blab his mouth off while dodging icicles.

They back up into a wall. The door was only a few feet away. They dive for it, and get pierced with an icicle. Ada's arm freezes, and Claws gets encased with ice.

Heat begins radiating from behind them, only to experience a much stronger burning sensation than before. They fall, unable to move due to shock and pain. Concern comes from D-stroy.

“It's clearly weak. How did it take down the mini boss? Especially since it's a dungeon monster.”

“Maybe it didn't…”

The voices begin blurring together. They slowly lift their head to look at the door. Ada lifts an arm up, and they grab the ground, dragging themselves towards the door.

“HEY GUYS ITS GETTING AWAY-”,

They slam the door closed. A ding echoes in their head.

System notification, mini boss respawning.

Take that you absolute a-

I applaud your…. effortsssss, but you…. Sssseriously need to learn to fight…. and not… run.

They sigh. I understand. Butttt you gotta answer my questions!

Later, after we…. find a… ssssafe ssspot.

Ada grabs the nearby wall, slowly getting themselves on their feet. They lean against it, walking ahead. They come across a door. They open it, then close it. A small closet greets them, outfitted with brooms and dustpans. They sit down. A screen appears before them, with no prompting.

Health: N/A Stamina: N/A Mana: 13%

Another appears before them.

Thiss one appearsss… if you think about… your… injuries. Only way…

Status effects.

Burned, exhaustion, frozen, mana degradation, missing arm, missing foot, shock.

That explains a few things… I can't see straight. Where be no seeing on there?

… har har…. Ada, you need… resset, but I can't…. let you go…. wivout any… fighting… sssskills any longer… I cringe…. every… time you keep… not fighting… when… these fights… are easy to win.

I have no skill slots though?

Not what I meant….. I mean I… have to teach… you how to fight...

Ada looks around the small space.

Plenty of room in here.

Plenty.

…that was sarcasm.

I know… I am going… to… take you… to my… special place…

Ada's mind begins to feel strange. Darkness encroaches their vision, and trusting D-stroy, they don't resist.

Everything feels funny like the world was changing, and air was beneath their feet, when solid ground appears beneath both feet. Ada cracks an eye open.

A night sky filled with glimmering stars shines above them, and an endless grassy plain.

Wow…

Ada immediately notices their voice echo across the landscape.

Did I talk?

No. You didn't.

A much more distorted version of their voice echoes behind them. Ada turns to see a dark red cloud, with A much more defined cloud shape then their humanoid one. Purple eyes that barely glow replace Ada's orange ones.

They wave a hand in front of D-stroy. Both hands were there, along with Destructive Claws. D-stroy waves a much more heavy duty Destructive Claw in front of them. It is much more claw shaped, along with several divots in it. It floats, and the other spins around them.

Ada points at the Claws, Very cool.

A rumbling sound that Ada thinks is D-stroy laughing happens.

You haven't even seen cool yet.

You are talking normally?

…this feels more natural to me. So I can talk easier.

Something attacks from behind them. Ada immediately jumps forward, turning to see their attacker. Nothing but moving grass.

D-stroy watches impassively.

Ada gets attacked again. They turn, seeing nothing.

D-STROY! Why are you doing this?

I'm not doing anything.

Ada gets attacked yet again, and they swipe at the attacker. They turn, seeing a dummy with a note saying, Made you look.

Ada looks back at D-stroy, glaring.

Another attack flies at Ada, and they swipe at it. They look on with satisfaction at the torn dummy, when another attack happens. Seeing a wooden sword get tossed at them, they turn, taking a sword to the face.

They blink, seeing D-stroy hovering over them.

Stop trying to understand what is attacking you. If something is attacking you, attack it. If it's out of range, dodge it.

Ada nods. D-stroy moves away, watching. A sword gets chucked at Ada, and attempting to follow D-stroy's instructions, dodge it. They try to get a look at what tossed the sword, and only receive a sword to the face.

After rinsing and repeating this, Ada sits down, frowning.

D-stroy nears, concern plainly written on their face. Even though they have no nose or mouth.

I can't do this. I can't. I'm not you, and I clearly can't do this.

D-stroy turns away. Ada watches D-stroy.

Did I say something wrong?

D-stroy turns back to them.

No you didn't. I did. I have been trying to train you how… I have been trying to teach you how to fight as if you don't think. I have now realized my mistake.

The grassy fields move with unfeel able wind. Ada gets up, stretching.

Let's try this again then.

… are you sure?

We have all the time in the world, I'm sure.

Correction, we only have the time until you wake up.

O. Let's get a move on then!

Let's focus on your dodging capabilities. You seem quite good at that.

I thought I was learning how to attack?

You are.

But dodging is moving away from an attack.

No, dodging is moving out of the way of an attack. That means you can get closer to an opponent while their guard is down. It's hard to dodge mid attack. The only way to fool this is by feinting. But we will discuss that later.

D-stroy waves a claw, and a ghostly version of Ada appears, along with one of the owls. The owl attacks, and Ada dodges underneath the attack, stabbing its neck, killing it.

D-stroy waves it away.

That owl was a grade above you.

Ada's eyes were already wide, until they widen even more.

Dodging an attack doesn't require much thought. Dodging an attack and planning where you want to dodge helps you take down creatures.

Ada nods.

Like when you were fighting the mini boss, you dodged one of its attacks, going underneath it. When you couldn't dodge it's next attack, you rolled with the blow, and used it to your surroundings to your advantage.

D-stroy nods.

It only works if you can actually damage the darn things with Claws. I won't go into detail about any of our other skills, like Destroy Soul, until you can master dodging, attacking, recognizing feints, feinting, counterattacking, and moves. Destructive Claws will be by far your most used tool, because of what reasons?

Oh, pop quiz... Hmm. You only have to summon them once, and they are very durable?

D-stroy nods. You are also forgetting Claw’s versatility, and its Destructive energy wave. I only recommend using the wave feature once per day. The first time will probably be free, because every time you destroy something, or kill something, the Claws collect Destructive affinity. The times after its first use will use your own mana, which is very expensive.

D-stroy shakes their ever changing cloudy head.

Back on topic.

A sword comes flying towards Ada.

Oh no. This is going to take some time.

Of course it will. These things don't happen overnight.

After many many flying swords, Ada lays down in the grass.

Can I take a break?

…oh. Uh um yes You can. You probably need to actually sleep. So this concludes our first Training session!

An unenthusiastic yeah follows.

The grassy fields disappear as Ada falls asleep.

Ada cracks an eye open.

UMM, D-STROY!

No response.

A vast canyon sits below them, filled with warring people. Their yells of rage and pain physically hurt Ada.

Whyyyy. I don't even know any of these guys.

“Sir, your shipment has arrived.”

Ada turns to their left to see a very familiar crazed person. Bloodshot eyes dart wround, and gray hair moves wildly in the wind. Strange spots that look like mold decorate his face. A shaking hand holds a dark crystal. The other is open, clearly waiting for the hooded figure to give him what he wants. The figure gives him an orange crystal.

A group of figures, all wearing hoods, stand behind him.

He frowns.

NOOOOO NOT AGAIN. WHYYYYYY. You are too scary. FOR NO REASON AT ALL.

In a very smooth and even voice, not matching his appearance at all, says, “I requested two.”

The humanoid nods, or at least Ada thinks they do, “The other one was lost. We are still trying to retrieve it.”

Crazy guy nods, his hand twitching. He turns away, watching the fight. Ada watches the hooded people, refusing to watch the bloodshed behind them.

Where has this, guilt, come from? It feels like I should turn into a puddle. And then evaporate.

They watch the people, who they suspect are cultists, move away from a very downtrodden figure. Their robes were covered in mud, and blood. Several tears reveal serious looking injuries.

They proffer a much more slimy looking black crystal. The guy grabs it without looking. He inspects it, and turns around. A very familiar looking tome replaces the crystal.

“Today, We make history. Today, we create a brand new horror. Today, we will create history. Today, we will revive the very beings who in the beginning, ruled supreme.”

Cheers come from the cult. He turns away, opening the book. He recites something from it, and no amount of moving from Ada manages to get them to move into view of what. Strange symbols pop up, and eventually a crystal. Then the other two. A storm of runes circles him.

The canyon's walls creak, shaking, and the cultists behind him begin chanting with him. The walls shake, and the ground splits, revealing a hole. The battling parties fall, none of them escaping. Screams follow.

The crystals all shatter, leaving a… liquid… in their places. The liquid, ignoring all laws of physics, goes straight for the hole. After a few chants later, the hole grows more, and a roar, a scream of promise. Orange crystals erupt from it, and a black ooze coats all of it.

Amalgamation of Vileness and Horrendousness.

Level 100

Boss rank: Elite

As the hole closes, a roar of rage emits from the ooze as the chanting reaches a crescendo. It spirals, creating a tornado of ooze. Orange crystals start being thrown from its funnel, killing many of the cultists. A symbol begins forming above the leader, growing bigger. The chanting ends, and the symbol launches itself towards the Amalgamation.

It screeches in pain as the symbol sears itself onto it.

Chapter 5

They drag themselves up to the rotted door handle, trying to grab it. Their Claws hook onto the rope, and they tug. The door doesn't open. A tortured animalistic scream comes from behind, speeding them along.

With renewed desperation, they pull on the door. Failing, they lean against it with exhaustion. It opens.

ARE YOU- this is fine. It opened. Congrats for working door.

They crawl into the room, kicking the door closed. The screams cut off. They lean against the door again, hoping nothing tries to break it. Footsteps near.

A rough voice says, “Hey, guys. Check this out.”

Several footsteps approach the speaker.

A soft female voice says, very close to the door, “It's one of those doors that usually contains uncommon loot.”

One of the people who hasn't spoken yet groans, “I'm already tired from fighting that Medusa style bird. Can't we go through the doors that are worth our time? It will take us years if we search every single door.”

A snarky voice mocking the person says, “Guys there is only uncommon loot in there, not worth our time, but it might be worth some of the community's time, but I'm too lazy wah.”

Snickering follows.

"He is right. We can't go through every door."

They move away fromt it, hoping the group continues debating. They wish their legs were fully operational. They crawl through the darkness, when dim light floods the room. Black dirty bricks and a white unclean floor. The something that isn't them but is recoils from the sight.

Step one to be left alone by the thing. Be in a black walled room and white floors.

A growl fills their mind.

They notice that it was… empty. They move closer to a wall and see marks where something might have been in. They move to the middle of the room, and see the imprint of a cylindrical object. They shrug, moving away from the sights. After searching the walls, they return to the middle of the floor, moving their broken legs into a sitting position.

They imagine their legs working, and they begin feeling weird.

OH, HAHA NO. TICKLES. MMM.

After their laughter, something shifts from under them, and they fall. They grasp the edge of the round hole with their claw tips. They try to get the other pair up there, but their grip slips.

After falling for an amount of time for them to realize they were falling, they collide with the awaiting ground. It doesn't injure them.

Is it cause I'm cloudy-

Everything freezes when they see a book. A weathered, thick, red leather tome. Panic engraves every nerve, every part of their mind.

WHY. THIS IS BY FAR THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING TO BE SCARDED OF.

Something nudges then along, and with shaking legs, and arms, they get off the ground. It glows with symbols. They move towards the book. They gently prod it. A screen appears before them.

Tome of Soul Ritualism (Mythical)

Allows the user to summon soul based creatures. Allows the user to summon uncategorized summons. Pages yet to be documented. Attunement required for reading.

CANNOT ATTUNE.

A memory resurfaces, clawing at their mind, and tearing their panic to shreds, leaving pure fear in its path.

A robed figure, holding this same book, and a black crystal, recites a verse from the book. The field below him is devoured by a hole, and the crystal shatters releasing inky blackness. Screams from the battling people falling into the hole. And a roar from the hole echos of hunger, of bloodshed, and horror.

The man turns to them, with an impossibly wide grin stretching wider, and bloodshot eyes, laughs.

The primal thing within triggers a skill. The book disappears, and so does the memory. They collapse, panting.

I need… a break… FROM… THESE MEMORIES… POPPING.. INTO.. MY HEAD!

They lean against the pedestal, wondering why this happens to them. Their sore limbs ache, and so does their head.

A low rumble echos in their head

I… c-an… anss-wr… va-t.

They jump, surprised by the mystery voice.

Who are you? WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY HEAD. Personal violation!

I… am… you. But… noo-t…hmm... I vought... thissss... would go... diff-erent-ly. And viss …iss asss personal …for… mee… asss it iss for… you.

The voice stops talking. An image appears in their head, unbidden by them. Their reflection, but cracked, with one side looking like them, while the other seems… more primal. Monster like.

Sooo are we stuck in one body?

NO! Wee are…….. one… aand… ve… sssame…ish.

How does that work?

Goo… too… sslee-p. Yo-WE… neeed it.

…how do I sleep.

No response.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Why do I feel like that was a way to not get questioned by me?

Their mind contemplates on the past events. Them waking up. Getting their first ‘memory shock’. The journal.

Sigh… why can't I relax for a few minutes.

GO. TO. SSLEEP.

They jump again.

Your noisssy… vinking… issss ruin-ing… my sssleep.

After forcefully making themselves not think, they eventually nod off.

They wake up, still leaning against the pedestal. After getting up, they look around. Stretching, they feel fine. A little sore, but fine. Seeing a tunnel off to the side, they get up and leave.

They mentally prod the something. A low rumble fills their mind.

I… am… awo-ken..

What did you do to the book?

An image of a cloud eating a poor creature surfaces.

… I didn't eat it. I mean YOU didn't eat it.

The tunnel was filled with black bricks, and discarded debris.

Looks mighty familiar.

…it'ssss… not vee… samee… tunnel.

They eventually reach the tunnel's end. A heavy duty door with a smoldering skull. They contemplate opening it.

Might as well.

They dig their feet in, and pull. With their enhanced strength, they barely manage to open it. They drop the handle, and look in. Darkness greets them. They walk inside.

For a dungeon of light, it's pretty dark in most of these rooms.

Sudden illumination blinds them, and they hear the door slam shut.

You have entered the domain of Beam Owl, lvl 48. Boss Rank, Mini Boss.

OH HEC-

Collision nearly brings them back into unconsciousness. After attacking it, the something tries pushing them to the side. Noticing what the thing within was trying to do, they resist. The something manages to get their body to dodge.

GET OUT OF HERE. THIS IS MY BODY, M-

…shut it… th-thiss…i-sss…our…bod-ee. Al-sso. I… wasss… te-k-nic-all-ee… hee-ree firsst.

I CAN DO THIS YO-

No... you can-t... you... barely killed... a fledgling... owl.

Their consciousness gets pushed to the side, unable to do anything against the much stronger thing.

I didn't pass out this time?

They feel their limbs get stretched, without them telling them or moving those limbs.

Oh no, this is going to feel crazy weird isnt it.

They dodge to the side, and then stand still. A screech from somewhere was all the info they needed to know where the mini boss was. They charge.

They collide with feathers, and their claws rake against it but bounce off.

I…hate…this…grade…difference…

Grade?

SHUT. IT. NO TALKING.

They dodge again, and the something uses a skill they haven't yet. The owl releases a bone chilling screech, and weakness overtakes them.

Stop… refer-ing to… me… as… ve somev-ing. We are Ada.

Waaaait. Is that m- our name?

Yessss.

Ada gets hit. They are sent flying backwards. Barely managing to orientate themselves onto a vertical wall, they bounce off. Using their momentum, they manage to stab the owl. A small trickle of hotness leaks onto their claws. The weakness abates.

The Light fades away, revealing an owl nearly triple the same size as the largest one they've seen. It also has forelimbs. The room appeared to once upon a time be white, with pillars supporting the massive height from floor to ceiling. The grey stains from bird droppings have clearly effected the total whiteness.

Before they could process the scene more, a leg swipes at them. They were not able to dodge out of the way, so they use a skill in a new way. Their cloudiness moves out of the way, turning into a liquid, but only partially. It forms back once the talon passes through it.

The owl breathes in, a frill of feathers splaying out. A glow begins emanating from its neck, slowly going to the head.

UH O. Viss… iss going… to hurt…

They dodge behind a pillar, compacting themselves with more fitness than they could ever do. They close their eyes.

A searing burning sensation follows, and they could see the light even with their eyes closed.

It ends. Ada peers around the corner, seeing a very exhausted owl. They trigger the skill again. With a final painful screech, it collapses.

They give control back to them. They stretch their limbs, enjoying the feeling of moving again, regardless of the burns.

Wee… need too… give… one… of… uss a dif-

Rent name? Yeah I agree.

You… can be… sssir talksss alot.

You can be miss overpowered.

Chuckles reverberate in their head.

Why not… D… hmm. D wat?

D-stroy?

Oo yes D-Stroy.

No… Deee-stroy.

D-stroy it is.

Ada moves towards the corpse.

What did you do to it?

Why do you talk like that?

I… don't… know. I feel a lot… of quest-ionsss… incoming.

Ada prods the corpse. It melts, making them jump. It slowly reveals a feathered chest, with the goo evaporating.

Ewww. I have to breathe that.

…wee… don't… breathe.

Oh.

Ada nears the chest, and lifts the heavy thing open.

A small gold orb glows within it. A screen pops up in their face.

Light essence. Rare.

Generates the light affinity. Used in potions or elixirs.

They close the tab, grabbing it.

Ussse… um… how do I… sssay… it…..nah.

They picture the orb disappearing into a space. The orb disappears from Ada's clutches.

Special thanks to MapleSyrup45 because they helped me come up with skills for our MC! Go check out their version of Chapter 4 in Chapter 3's comments! I found it very enlightening about my style of writing and how it doesn't deal much with descriptions. In the future, I will 'fix' these chapters and try to put in more details, and try to put in more detail in future chapters.

Chapter 4

Blackness encroaches their vision, and they crack an eye open. Their eyes widen in shock.

What how huh what why how huh.

They stare at the grassy fields, a little house on a hill, and a surrounding forest. An ache they were not aware they even had disappears.

How? Did my mind imagine this because of that book? Or did the book do something to my brain? … do I even have a brain? Why does this place feel like… home?

They watch the grass move peacefully in the afternoon sun, the greenness moving like an ocean wave. A soft glow seems to encompass everything, making the scene look angelic.

They snap their head up to the house, who's door has opened.

A small girl no older than ten marched out, a happy grin on her face. Curly black hair moves with the wind, and a pale face crinkles into a grin. A lanky older man watches her with a small smile. A fierce feeling of loss overcomes them.

He yells, “Don't forget to avoid anything strange! And this time please remember to come home before the sun sets!”

The girl's red eyes widen in mock horror, “Me? Forget? Anything? Never in a zillion years Daddy!”

She bounces down a path of round stones, and goes straight to them. They back away, searching for a place to hide. Noticing that the little girl would've seen them by now, they stay in place. She skips straight through them.

Does she not see me? She went through me, and I didn't feel a single thing. Sooo do I not exist here?

They look towards the house, and the path the small girl took.

I'm following her. I also would like to escape this soft glow.

They walk onto the path the girl was skipping on. Grumbling because of the soft glow that still remained. They watch her skirt get caught on some brambles, but with a smile on her face, gently takes the skirt off.

She leans down to it, and puckers her lips, “You know that was rude, right Mr. Bramble? Please stop trying to steal my skirt. I know it's pretty, but it's mine. I can't share it with you!”

She stands up straight, and resumes skipping down the path. They spot no monsters, or animals. Just the girl on her path. She eventually stops at the end of the stones, and she looks beyond it.

She turns around, looking back. A mischievous look clearly on her face. She then takes a step off the path. A giggle escapes from her, and she walks off at a random direction.

Oh no. I don't think she is allowed to do that…

They resume following her. They go through any obstacles, as if they were not there.

Illusions maybe? Did a mind based monster get me? But that wouldn't make sense, the dungeon I'm in is of the light affinity. Not the mind affinity, if that's even an affinity.

They flinch. The darkness surrounding them was completely unexpected. The soft glow disappears. They remember that it was still sunny a few moments ago, and the scenery had changed.

They watch the girl look around, glaring at her surroundings.

She stomps a foot, announcing, “Darkness, go away. I'm not in the mood for this game.”

They cringe at the little girl's words.

What better way to tell everything around her that there is a tasty morsel right here?

A dim light appears through bushes and thick trunks, and the girl's eyes immediately latch on to it.

A grin covers her face, “I'm coming Daddy!”

She races towards it dodhging overhanging branches and ivy, as they unwillingly follow. They watch her stop at the glowing thing, and when they get closer, they notice it was a crystal filled with red clouds.

An unexpected screen appears in front of them.

Crystalline Soul. Legendary.

A crystal containing an elemental's soul. Used in rituals or potions.

“Daddy is going to love this!”

A small finger delicately touches the crystal, stroking it.

“I'm going to call you… whatever my dad turns you into! So that would beeee W… M. T. U. I Wmtui? Yee Wmtui!

Darkness covers their vision of the scene. The darkness remains, and their consciousness embraces unconsciousness.

They crack an eye open, and a little bit of built up tension releases them.

I'm not dead… good.

Their limbs all ache from the exertion they used, not helped by sitting against a wall for some time. They look around for any signs of approaching creatures.

It's not like I bleed or something. So I don't think they could smell me…

What was that? A vision? A hyper realistic dream? They imagine the red crystal again. Was that… me? Did the little girl's dad create me? … wouldn't that make me his… child? Daughter? Son? What would be the term for that anyway… Am I the little girl's cousin? Brother? Sister?

A memory resurfaces. Them holding that same girl and her dying. And a red cloud cushioning them as pain radiates from everywhere.

I remembered that when I opened the book…

An obnoxious ding shocks them out of their thoughts.

Yeah! RIGHT. Level ups.

They open up their menu, and only now notice the skill selection tab.

I'm going to ignore how I ignored that.

Welllll leveling fifteen times does make this look insane.

Plus signs appear for all of the stats.

Let's see here… I use Destructive Claws a lot, and that abilities power levels are determined by strength and intelligence. I think I've only used destructive Claws and none of my other skills, oh no wait. Amalgamations Adaptability I've used loads.

They open the skill up.

Scales with Willpower. Not a regular stat.

They revise the skills they have, and note how most of them scale with Willpower and Intelligence.

… Some of these are so useless for an entire Skill Slot. Especially If I can get something better immediately. Why is primal instincts errored out? Now I want to unlock it to see if the status stuff would break more.

They mentally cross out Dullness, Sprint, Light resistance, and Dodge.

Sounds come from their left, and they carefully turn their head, seeing torchlight, and the shadow of a beast. More sounds follow, and they identify the sounds as shouting and screeching.

I need to move.

They try to stand up, only for their legs to give out and break. The cloudiness billows around them.

WHAT? MY LEGS CAN BREAK?! But it doesn't hurt huh.

After quickly looking through the skills again, they select Ethereal.

Let's hope it works as advertised…if I can't get away in time.

They notice a… ‘switch’ appear in their mental space. They flick the imaginary switch on, nearing the strange something. After extracting themselves from their head, they activate Destructive Claws. A headache hits them, and they push though. They drag themselves away from the noise, searching for a home base of some sort.

After crawling down corridors, and finding squeakers, they find a door.

…I hope it's not the same one as before…

I have no clue when Chapter 5 comes out, but I will be asking who reads this in another post. And also about some story related stuff there as well.

Chapter 3

They look into the corridors, noticing the twists and turns.

Yeah no. Screw this. Let's figure out an easier way… They look up the walls. Maybe I can climb these?

They claw at the wall, and with their heightened strength, pierce the wall. They slowly drag themselves up the wall. They clamber onto the top.

Oh wow, this maze is… massive.

An array of twists and turns lay before them, going far enough that they couldn't see where the maze ends. They walk to the closest disconnected wall. They look from the gap, to the height, and back again.

I don't think I can jump that. Well, I could try, but that would unfortunately lead to my demise if I didn't make it.

They stand on the top of the wall, watching, thinking. They notice some specks approaching. As they get closer, they recognize the specks to be owls, moving at high speed. They take a step back.

What? How? Do they have a really precise sense of smell? Wait. The dungeon must've had a feature that prevented people who could jump that gap from cheesing the maze by walking up here. Yeah. That makes sense.

They nod at their incredible thinking skills.

The owls are not that big, but there are five of them… Less thinking, more escaping.

A claw swipe they barely dodge attacks them.

MORE FLEEING AND DEFINITELY LESS THINKING!

They jump off the side, and jam their claws into the wall. They gradually slow down, and when their cloudy feet touch the ground, they sprint. Taking a random amount of twists and turns, they encounter no dead ends.

They stop after who knows how long, listening for squawking or wing flaps.

I think I escaped them.

They turn around the corner to face an incoming talon. They dodge away from the strike, gut still take the hit. Pain radiates from their body, and the…something… they have been avoiding mentally growls in disapproval. A switch seems to have been flicked, and their conciseness begins to disappear. As darkness encroaches their vision, they feel themselves swipe at the owl, with no mental command from them. Two more owls land behind the previous one.

They sit up, painicing, aware that something warm and sticky is stuck on them. They investigate themselves, seeing their claws are absolutely covered in blood. Several chunks are missing, and they notice the owls seem to be missing too. Until they look down, below where they are.

All five owls' entrails were brutally discarded up and down several corridors, with their skeletons in a pile reminiscent of a throne.

Oooh uhmm. Ouch. Whatever happened, I don't plan on it happening again…

They double check their surroundings. They are within a wall of the maze, with moss covering the entrance. The back wall was decorated in blood, still dripping. They investigate the floor, searching for footprints, only to find their own bloody steps. They look back at the wall, reading: I Am Ada.

A claw print replaces the dot. They put their claw in it, seeing it was an exact match.

So are you, whatever you are, Ada, or am I this mystery Ada?

No response from the something within.

Screw you then.

A screech resounds from behind them, and they see a very vengeful face staring at them. They turn into a liquid, noticing how the transformation was slower. They slide past the owl. They get to the bottom, and see a pair of talons before them. They turn back into their regular self, just in time to avoid the talon swipe aimed at their puddle self.

They run, but after turning into a dead end, they get pinned once again. The owl picks them up, and they try to scratch the feet. Their claws bounce off, and they get lifted up. Rising above the walls, the owl flaps. Then it stops. Hot blood drips from a hole inside the owl onto them as they both fall.

Unfortunately, they cushioned the dead owls' fall, and they desperately try to escape.

I DO NOT WANT TO MEET WHATEVER MADE A HOLE IN THIS DARN THING.

With a final push, they wiggle out from under the dead monster, thanking the Free Points they put into strength, as they run away from the corpse.

After many twists, turns, and backtracks, they find a corridor not covered in debris, corpses, or talon marks. They sit against the wall, and will their system screen to appear.

I… need…. a break… everything… is yelling at me… to stop moving… for the next… couple of… centuries…

They wave the tabs close, and open the next one.

Another notification appears.

They watch the loading screens bar fill up in agony. It dings, signaling the end of their suffering.

Seems straightforward… enough…

They wave them both closed.

Last one.. then nappy time …

They slump onto the ground.

Rise of the Amalgamation, Grizz's Story 1, Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Hmm? Wha..

They wake up, and blink a few times.

Wait…

They see a room filled with potions, beakers, plants, motar and pedestal, bookshelves, books, ink and quill, and dust. Lots of dust.

No cobwebs?

They try to move towards the books, only to get stopped. After backing up, they see glass, and their own reflection. A roughly humanoid red cloud of swirling red. Glowing orange eyes of the same material as the rest of them.

… somehow I was expecting something less…um, edgy? Emo? Less red.

They move up to the glass, and lean against it. They try punching it, only to figure out their ‘fist’ wasn't solid enough. They try leaning against it again, only to slip down to the floor.

How do I get out of this tube? The glass is too strong, and apparently a fist doesn't work…

Their mind goes in several loops, their ‘head’ falls, and they notice a crack at the very bottom of the glass. They immediately start picking at it, only to find out that intangible fingers don't work while trying to touch tangible things.

Hmmm. Maybe if I think really hard on becoming rock solid?

They pick at the glass again.

Nothing.

A noise scares them. They look up to see the culprit was a…they weren't sure. It was a long furry thing with a little snoot, and beady eyes, and a pink tail. It looks at them, squeaks, and flees. In its rush to escape it knocks over a vail. Within it is a black liquid.

I think that's ink. Wait.

They will themselves to become a liquid. Nothing.

Oh come on. Something has to work.

Hours passed as they try to become rock solid, with nothing to show for it. They eventually return to the idea of becoming a liquid. After trying to do that, they slump on the ground.

Why was I even thinking of becoming liquid?! That's a stupid idea! A human can't do that… Why am I thinking like I am a human? Why do I know what a human is?! And not the squeaker? Maybe that's why I can't go liquid. I'm thinking like a human not a… a what? I don't know…

Some part of themselves does believe they can turn into a liquid. Something unintelligible.

Umm, no thank you. That scares me. Whatever that is.

They were staring at the floor, but they have returned to staring at the ink. They focus, ignoring everything else, and watch the ink slowly drip, and spread. Something, clicks, and their form starts to feel like it is vibrating. They collapse, and they feel like they were sinking into the floor, and spreading.

Did it work?

They attempt to get up, only to find that their feet look like red sludge, instead of looking like gas. And are slowly sinking.

I DID IT! YESSSS! I AM THE BEST!

They let themselves turn into a puddle, and then they move through the crack, slowly wiggling out to the other side. A blue screen pops up in front of them halfway, with some words.

Ummmmm, did I break it?

Another screen appears.

Would you like to enter the Light Feather Dungeon Lvl 25? Y/N

As a monster, you may enter a dungeon and take it over, replacing the boss with yourself. You must have the Boss Rating: Boss, in order to do this.

Umm, Yeah?

They get bombarded by more screens.

After all of this, they unconsciously turn back into a cloud and sit down outside the glass tube.

This is… a lot to process. How did I know what to do there?

After chilling for who knows how long, they hear a squeak. They turn towards their foot and see another squeaker. They smile.

Why are you so cute… makes me want to squish you.

They look at the screen they have been avoiding, and tap Race.

Race: Amalgamation of Destructive Assimilation (Rare). Grade G. Level 0. Stats given 2+ Strength, 3+ Wisdom, 4+ Intelligence. +5 free points. Lv 5 times to gain special points.

Yeah. I'm an Amalgamation, whatever that means, not a person. Why do I think like one then? And not like a regular monster?

They lift their head and view the lab.

Maybe these journals have something in them…

Something basically screams ‘NO’ at them. They should do something else…

They tap an x in the corner of the screen to dismiss the Race screen, and hover a cloudy finger over Variant Skills.

Let's hope it tells me I have something that can protect me from the dungeon's inhabitants.

Variant Skills:

Assimilated Forms. Legendary.

Allows user to change into forms of previously assimilated entities. Scales with Wisdom.

UMMMM. I can turn into a squeaker?! How do I Assimilate things… They read the next line. Oh.

Assimilate Soul. Legendary.

Allows the user to consume a killed soul, thus gaining energy of users choice, and fusing that soul with your own. No experience awarded for assimilating beings. Scales with Intelligence and Willpower.

Their mind skims over ‘fusing that soul with your own’. That seems like a good way to kill things. Naaa wait a minute. I misread it. It just gives mana, and a form. Wait. Could I Assimilate a dragon? And then turn into it? That would be awesome.

Destroy Soul. Rare

If an enemy is weakened enough, it allows the user to destroy their opponent's soul, thus rendering any possible resurrection impossible. Scales with Intelligence.

No enemies coming back to kill me after I kill them? Wouldn't resurrection be kinda rare? Sounds nice, but it's not an immediate way to kill something.

Destructive Claws. Rare

Summon a pair of ethereal claws, either in the air on the hands. Increased upkeep for floating claws. Allows the user to attack with Claws, dealing less damage to the environment. Build up charge of destructive energy. Scales with Strength and Intelligence.

I think this is how I'm going to murder things.

Possess Object. Common

Allows user to possess an object, either seeing through it or manipulating it. Uses a small amount of mana, making it undetectable. Scales with Willpower.

…okay? What could I possibly use this for?

They think on how they could use the skills, and move on to the second to last unknown tab, closing the other one.

Creates a stored space, size scales with level. Can store items and natural treasures of rare variety and below.

Massive protection applied towards the Amalgamations soul, as several have been fused. 10+ to all normal stats per level, and increases damage done to other souls. Scales with Willpower.

Oo. Does this mean I can kill something if it's not weak? I hope so.

Amalgamations Adaptability. Legendary

Allows the Amalgamations shape to change from a mana cloud and into more solid states, such as liquid. Scales with Willpower.

Ooooh. I feel stupid now. Why can't I turn into a rock?

Destructive Amalgamations Domain. Common

Upon activation, any within your aura feel horror and doom, and you can more easily impose your will on mana, even more so on destructive mana. Scales with Intelligence.

Wait wait wait. I can control whatever mana is? What even is mana?

Telepathy. Common [S]

Allows elementals to conserve with others. Scales with Wisdom.

Huh. Does this mean I don't have a mouth and I talk with my mind? Also what is that S thing?

They close the tabs, and notice the squeakers are all gone.

Welp. Next one, this ‘other’ tab.

They open it, and discover a huge information dump.

Okay then. I'm not very agile at all. I'm stubborn? Why else would I have 15 Willpower?

As an Amalgamation, you do not have a health pool or stamina pool, or the Life, Toughness, Endurance, or Persistence stat. Points toward these have not been given.

Oh. That makes sense.

As an elemental of destruction, you possess the death affinity.

Perfect for deading things, an affinity called death. What's an affinity? I think it's umm. I know but I don't know how to explain it. How does that work?

As an assimilation entity, your soul is far stronger than average, allowing soul attacks of the rare variety to not damage you. Soul attacks dealt by you deal more damage.

So should I be using soul attacks? I have a lot of synergy for soul based attacks, so maybe.

Achievement award: As a completely new variety of Amalgamation, your mana pool is 10% bigger.

I don't remember getting this…

Achievement award: As an Amalgamation that has achieved intelligence by itself, less mana expenditure is given.

This yes. The other one? Nope. Free achievement?

They tap a finger. They close all of the floating screens, and stride over to the desks.

Let's see what's in these.

They flip open a book, going to the back. A bloodstained page with shaky letters. Something starts clawing at their insides, releasing a mental scream of torment. Memories flash by them in a blur. They don't understand what they were seeing. A lively old man. A cloud getting poured into a tube. A young black haired girl. Protecting the girl, and her dying. A cloud of red holding them while pain radiates from everywhere.

They didn't realize they were screaming too until a long feathered neck extended its head into the room.
