BLINDED BEFORE STARLIGHT

PART 1

Chapter 1

"Okay, what do you want me to type, Reina?" Garret says

"I CAN SEE GALAXIES. That's all I'll ever see. I am blind. I have been most my life.I've never seen anyone, let alone my self. I don't know who I am. I don't know my favorite color, I don't know what color my hair is. I don't even know my race. All I know is my age. 11. I've never read or wrote in my life. I can't taste. I can't smell. I can barely hear. I am basically dead.

My mother has told me about Helen Keller and what an amazing person she was. I'll never be as brave as her, I mean, she was smart and she knew sign language. I tried to learn sign language, but I always ended up signing something wrong. I had a service dog, but not for long. I ended up blinding him when I ran into a boiling pot. It spilled on him, and blinded him in his left eye. Girls at school call me "Hurricane Reina". They think I can't hear. I've had hearing aid for 7 years. I can talk. But, I don't. Nobody would care what I have to say anyways. What could I saw I'd be emo sounding "I SEE DARKNESS". But however, I spoke once, to my service dog. I was friends with the service dog, I named him BFD. (Short for Big, Furry, Dog) My voice was deep, and quiet. I learned that from my grandmother.

I can't remember much from being a toddler, when I could hear, see, and taste. I could only remember one thing: The Accident.

BEFORE

'Your test is on Monday. Study over the weekend." Mrs.Carra says. Mara stares at me. I hate this class, the teacher always has a test. I'm already passing with a ninety. Mrs. Carra dismisses everyone. "Class is boring, isn't it?" Mara says while tying up her hair. "Class is boring." I walk to my locker, but before I get there I see Niles, the quarter-back for the school. "Hey Maya, are you going to the dance?" He says. I stare at him and push him away from my locker. He was so annoying. I didn't even understand why he kept bothering me. Mara looks at me. "Yes, I'm going, just not with you." I say. He walks away slowly. Mara looks amazed and says "He's hot, and you just push him away like that?" I laugh at her. "He's been your crush since 4th grade, M. Of course YOU like him." Mara frowns playfully "Besides, he's nothing but trouble..." I say. Suddenly to bell rings, screaming that it's time to leave. Everyone always crowds out of the school. Wendi, the captain of the cheerleading squad walks over to me. She calls over to her twin brother and he walks over to me. Oh no. They start cheering " 5. 6. 7. 8! Guess who's a dork? Your a dork! D-O-R-K! DORK!" I walk away bumping into the introvert of the school, Steve. No one knows his last name. He ignores me and continues waling down the sidewalk. Mara already left to go to her sewing classes,
