Chapter 22- Sachu’s Birthday

It was warm and bright, bits of yellow light shining through the curtains of the room. Sachu was still asleep, despite today being his birthday. He didn’t care about it much, but little did he know what wonders would await him that day.

It was as if nothing could wake up Sachu. He was so immersed in his dream, that waking him up would ruin everything for him. Unfortunately, that’s what Rugigohno did. She’d been biding her time until Sachu’s birthday happened, and today was finally the day. Instead of shouting at the top of her lungs to get Sachu on his feet, Rugigohno slowly crept up on him. She took each step carefully, trying not to wake Sachu up just yet. It was almost inevitable not to make a sound when opening and closing the door, but Rugigohno managed to make the quietest creak come out of it.

“Sachu….” She said, creeping closer to Sachu’s bed.

“Wake up! Today’s a very special day…” for some reason, Rugigohno began to giggle, which managed to wake Sachu up.

“wha-...how-...M-Ms. Rugigohno?” Sachu faintly said, still adjusting to the brightness, and warming up his voice. Rugigohno grinned.

“Don’t you know what today is?”

Sachu’s face brightened as soon as Rugigohno uttered, ‘birthday’. All of a sudden, he seemed excited to be celebrating his birthday.

“You wanna know the crazy bit about it?” Rugigohno hyped up. (Sachu was indeed hyped.)

“You’re 9 years old now! You’re growing so fast!” She wiped off a “tear” from the corner of her eye, even though she didn’t shed a single one. Rugigohno immediately pulled Sachu into a hug, which was so sudden, that Sachu almost jumped out of her arms.

“Is there anything different about me? I feel exactly the same as yesterday. Except my age has changed.” He looked up innocently at Rugigohno.

“You’ll probably start changing when you reach about 10. I know I started changing when I reached that age.” She remarked. Sachu smiled, curious by what Rugigohno meant when she said, ‘You’ll probably start changing when you reach about 10.’

“How will I look when I’m 10?” He queried.

“Different. You’ll be taller. Maybe your hair will be longer. That depends though, it might get cut.” She ruffled Sachu’s hair, then got up and went into the living room. At least, that’s what she referred the room to.

“Isn’t this so exciting?” Rugigohno exclaimed, Sachu walking towards the tv.

“Is Voltron on?” He asked.

“You can check!” Rugigohno cheered. She sat herself down on the couch, looking at Sachu, who was mesmerized by the tv. It warmed her heart how Sachu went from once a scared and abused child, to a sweet and funny almost-pre-teen. Of course he had a few more years to go until he would officially be a pre-teen, but the way he acted made his pre-teen-ieness even more believable.

“Hey Sachu? Can I ask you something?” Rugigohno called from the couch. Sachu immediately turned his head, and scooted his way to where Rugigohno was.

“Yeah?”

“Have you ever celebrated your birthday before? Or is this your first time.” She got off the couch and sat on Sachu’s level, smiling. Sachu began to zone out. At least, that’s what Rugigohno thought. Sachu, once again, was buried in his own mind, trying to find some memory of him celebrating his birthday. He found none.

“No. I haven’t.” Sachu responded.

“They never even seemed to notice my birthday. To them, being born was enough.” He continued. Rugigohno nodded, taking in what Sachu had said.

“Well, then this day will be extra special!” She jumped up.

Rugigohno walked over to the phone, dialed in a number, and let the phone ring. Sachu was captivated by what was going on.

“What are you doing?” He interrogated. Rugigohno put a finger on her lips, signaling him to be quiet. Soon after, Rugigohno started talking on the phone.

“Ukime! Look—I know we haven’t really talked in a while, but today is Sachu’s birthday, and I want-”

“I’ll be there soon with Wayorada.” Ukime interrupted.

“O-okay!” Rugigohno hung up, silently laughing. Somehow though, Sachu could tell she was cracking up.

“What’s so funny?” He asked. Rugigohno began to laugh harder, completely ignoring Sachu’s question. Despite being unaware of what made Rugigohno laugh so much, Sachu brushed it off, and went back to the tv.

“Darn it! I missed a chunk of the episode!”

A smile began to form on Rugigohno’s face as she watched Sachu, who was once again, enthralled by the tv. The bright colors from the screen casted onto Sachu’s face, making him look like a chameleon. The colors were very faint, but every time the scene changed in the show, so did the colors. Each shift from color to color was so—....engrossing. Right then, at that very moment, Rugigohno jumped up from leaning

on the table, and rushed to her bedroom. Despite making a little scene, Sachu didn’t bat an eye. In fact, he inched closer to the tv. Although, that probably wouldn’t be too good for his eyes.

“Where did I put it?” Rugigohno frantically asked herself. What was she even looking for? She checked her drawers, although what she was dying to find wouldn’t fit in there. She looked in every nook and cranny of the room, her mind set on finding this thing.

“Ah!” She grinned. “There it is.”

“Sachu!” Rugigohno called out from the bedroom. Fortunately for Rugigohno, it caught Sachu’s attention.

“Yes, Ms. Rugigohno?” He got up, and started to walk towards her.

“GAH-!! Sachu, don't come in here!” she yelped, waving her hands in front of her.

“W-why?”

Rugigohno slightly, and quickly, glanced behind her, where a hefty object was sitting on her bed. Luckily, Sachu didn’t notice.

“Get ready. It’d be quite rude to look like this when guests arrive! Especially on your birthday.” Rugigohno waved him off to the bathroom, while also preparing his clothes for when he gets out of the shower. Once she heard the water running from the bathroom, Rugigohno immediately darted back into her bedroom. It was finally revealed what this mysterious thing she was keeping from Sachu was. A cb radio.

Nothing much happened while Sachu was in the shower. …Well, maybe Rugigohno wrapping the cb radio was something. It wasn’t something crazy though. Except… it kind of was…? Before Rugigohno could put the bow on, a loud knock came from the living room. She jumped up, startled from the sudden noise.

“Hello?” She called out, knowing very well that the person outside couldn’t hear her. So she did the next best thing. Opening the door. There Korimeke was, standing with a bright smile plastered on her face. She was wearing an auburn colored dress, with pearl embellishments aligned on the neckline. Her hair was almost the same as always, except it looked slightly curled, with bits of glitter shining on her strands of hair. The glitter was also scattered all over her skin, making her look mystical.

“Aren’t you gonna greet me?” Korimeke chuckled, still keeping that smile on her face. She then leaned in for a hug, getting glitter all over Rugigohno and her clothes.

“I—I didn’t expect you to come so early!” She laughed it off, while also wiping off some of the glitter that had gotten onto her.
“Well,” Rugigohno began,

“Since you came so early, you’re going to help with setting everything up.” She patted Korimeke’s back, then walked back into her bedroom. A faint breeze pushed Korimeke’s hair a little as Rugigohno passed by.

“Ms. Rugigohno!” Sachu yelled out from the bathroom. No response. Rugigohno and Korimeke had been occupied by setting everything up. Rearranging stuff around, cleaning up the place, and you know—making it look nice. Just then, another knock came along, making both Korimeke and Rugigohno jump up.

“I-I’ll get it!” Korimeke scurried towards the door, still shaking a little. At that very instant, Rugigohno dropped the cb radio on her legs. She didn’t care enough to realize the hurt though.

I know this chapter ended a little suddenly, but the next chapter picks up from here, so hopefully it will make a little sense...? Or whatever that means, anyways, hope you liked this chapter !! :D
