Divorce advise and a vent

Hi! If u don’t know me Hi I’m belle and I go by the name girl online. My parents divorced when I was 7 and I am now 13 so I feel qualified to talk about that can affect you mentally based off of my experiences

I had a really good experience with divorce. Before my parents divorced they had slept in separate rooms for some years and I had a feeling something was up but because I was only 7 I didn’t know much about it. When they did divorce they sat us down and explained it in terms that me and my 5 y/o brother could understand. I was fine with the fact I was going to be spending most time with my mum because I have always been a mama’s girl but my brother was less good with it as he is definitely a daddy’s boy. He was the only one of us that could stay with my dad as I had extreme separation anxiety to the point I literally had to sleep in my mums room till I was 10 and school said I needed to get this sorted out after my residential where I had a panick attack one night and I had to sleep in a solo room for the rest of the week. Then my therapist made me stop sleeping in my room and I can happily say I have less separation anxiety than I did. The only problem is I associate these memories lots with my dad’s house as whenever I have tried it has been very hard.

Anyway. This means that now someone in my friendship group has told us that her parents are getting a divorce I feel like it’s not that big of a deal because it happens to me when I was 7 and the only ongoing effects are separation anxiety which I now have under control. It’s not better as everyone at school seems to think as I signed up for a residential, it’s just under control. The only problems with her arrangement are the fact that she is spending time 50/50 and her parents announced the divorce before everything had been sorted out. This means she is constantly worrying about what her mums new house will be like and how her new living arrangements will start.

Again, now as I never had anything like thing happen I feel really bad because she keeps coming to me for advice and all I can say is my parents where living in separate areas in the house, only meeting in the kitchen (that is the one thing I miss about my parents living together, my dad is an amazing cook and always makes exciting food. My mums idea of dinner is something like penne and tomato sauce or on a Sunday when my cousin comes over from uni roast dinner). It didn’t matter to me when he moved out because i had always been a mummy’s girl and now I’m older I have a way better relationship with my dad than I previously did and I think something to do with that is because he is a volenteer rugby coach at my brothers rugby club and I am now getting into hockey/cricket so we have more shared interests. But anyway. Now I just feel so useless because to most of my friends someone getting a divorce is the stuff of nitemares and the girl whose parents are getting a divorce used to pity me for my divorced parents. I’m glad they divorced, my houses have felt so much better once they divorced and the positives effects for me have been huge.

She is now going through it and I hope she is fine with it but because I was not 3 like most girls in my year were when their parents divorced I’m fed up with everyone coming to me for divorce advice. I don’t remember, it didn’t affect me and I don’t want to say that to anyone because it might make them feel like being sad is a stupid thing to feel because it’s not
