Topper Chap1

*EH! EH! EH* As I turn off the alarm clock, I realize that it went off 15 minutes ago. "I'm late!" I screamed as I scrambled to put on my clothes. I stuff my backpack with the things I need. "Hm.. School computer... folders.. lunchbox...blah blah.. okay I'm good!" I said. I run downstairs and stuff the french toast into my mouth. "But honey, are you not thirsty?" Mom exclaims. My younger sister comes over and says "I got it!" While she throws the plastic bottle of orange juice at my head. "Owwwch!! Mom, are you gonna let her get away with that??" I say angrily. "Listen hon, we've been waiting for you for so long and I have to drive your sister to school!" She told me with a tired expression. Great. I have to use my bus pass to get to school. If you know anything about me, you'll know I hate public transportation. It's sketchy if you ask me. But hey! No choice do I? Soo I suck it up and rush to the bus stop. "Bye, mom! Bye, sis!" I yell while I go out the door. It's raining outside so I trench through the mud. Luckily I have my rainboots on so let's go. Oh, look! I made it to the bus stop. Well, this must be the perfect time to introduce myself. My name is Aisha Topper my sister's name is Kim. I won't reveal any other things about myself other than this story is going to take some turns so stay tuned!

The Triceratops had a neck plate at the rear part of the skull pointed backward, to form a protective neck covering. The Triceratops also had powerful jaw that were tipped with a pointed beak. The location where the Triceratops lived was in North America and in other unknown places of the world. The name Tricerotops means "Three Horned Face"

Dinosaur Club Talk Part 3

Today in the Dinosaur Club we're gonna talk about Dinosaur called Suchomimus. The spinal bones on the back supported a bump similar to a camel's. they were shorter than those of Spinosaurus, the gigantic descendent of Suchomimus . The skull was over 3 ft in length. Suchomimus used its strong legs for plunging into rivers to catch fish, and probably also for swimming.

Elasmosaurus

I'm honored to be the first guest post in the Dinosaur Club.

Today we will talk about Elasmosaurus. You pronounce it as "ee-lazmo-saw-rus"

Elasmosaurs lived during the late Cretaceous period over 80.5 millions years ago. They could get up to 46 feet in length and had super long necks with 72 vertebrae in the them.

They needed to breathe air, but probably spent all of their time in the water. They could poke their heads above water to breathe and were slow swimmers. Because of this they are considered to be reptiles.

I read that they are so strange looking, when scientists first found one they put the head where the tail is by mistake when putting it together!

Recently, a new species of them was found in Montana that had a much shorter neck with just 40 vertebrae. It is actually a big discovery in the dinosaur world.

The Pachycephalosaurus had a very big skull, the skull was attached to the spine and neck with very strong muscles and tendons. This added strength must have been important to Pachycephalosaurus, but scientist are still unsure exactly how. The hips were wide, wich has led some scientist to believe that these Dinosaurs fought each other sideways.

The Dinosaurs of Spain

In Bastus, Spain, an estimation of 300,000 sauropod eggs the size of a melon laid 70 million years ago in a beach were were discovered. It is believed that these might be eggs from Titanosaurus or Hypselosaurus.

Here are some of the dinosaurs that lived there:

Titanosaurus, one of the last sauropods. It had skin covered in nodules, probably for defense.

Hypsilophodon, an ornithopod (a dinosaur who walked on it's toes) who had cheek pouches designed to hold plants and could run at up to 23 miles per hour or 37 kilometers per hour, which is a little bit faster than a human.

Hypselosaurus, an herbivorous dinosaur who lived in the Late Cretaceous who laid eggs that were 8 inches or 20 centimeters long.

Pelecanimimus, a carnivorous ornithomimid (meaning bird mimic) who had 200 small teeth and birdlike legs designed for sprinting.

The province Cuenca in Spain has limestone from the Cretaceous. This limestone has eroded by many years of wind and water. Dinosaur fossils can be found inside these rocks.

More than 20 species of dinosaur have been exacavated in Portugal. They lived from the Middle Jurassic from the Late Cretaceous. But here are some of them:

Brachiosaurus, an herbivorous dinosaur with a long neck and hind legs that are shorter than it's front legs.

Camptosaurus, an iguanodont (herbivorous dinosaurs with teeth resembling those of an iguana) with four toes.

Camarasaurus, an herbivorous dinosaur who ate soft plants, twigs, and branches and lived in the temperate forests of the Jurassic.

The First Dinosaurs In Europe

Approximately 225 million years ago in the Late Triassic, Europe had it's first dinosaurs. During this time, Europe was at the North edge of the supercontinent Pangea, which was close to the equator. The temperature of the region was high and the land was arid. Conditions were milder at the coast where herbivorous dinosaurs dwelled on a diet of ginkgoes, fan-leaved trees also known as maidenhair trees. There were also carnivourus dinosaurs. These dinosaurs were anscestors of dinosaurs who would come later.

More than 50 areas in Europe have produced dinosaur specimens from the Late Triassic.

Some of the dinosaurs that lived in Late Triassic Europe are:

Plateosaurus, an herbivorous dinosaur who lived in Switzerland, Germany, and France and who had long feet and a small head.

Thecondontosaurus, a prosauropod (early herbivorous dinosaur) who was discovered in 1834 at a limestone quarry in Bristol, England with sharp claws on each foot and a tail that was held off the ground when in motion.

Sellosaurus, a lightly built German prosauropod.

Liliensternus, a carnivorous ceratosaur (early lizard-hipped dinosaur) with strong legs who lived in France and Germany.

Araripe Basin

Fossils from the Cretaceous have been excavated in Araripe Basin in Brazil. During the Cretaceous, South America was close to Africa. As the two continents moved away from each other, a sea was formed. Miniature carnivorous dinosaurs inhabited the edges of this sea. Since no herbivorous dinosaurs were excavated, it is likely that these carnivorous dinosaurs ate fish. Soon, the sediments found on the seabed became rock. This created the limestone of Santana Formation.

Araripe Basin is located in Northeastern Brazil and is approximately 3,000 square miles or 8,000 square kilometers.

Here are some of the dinosaurs that lived in Araripe Basin:

Angaturama, a dinosaur with three-fingered hands with hooked claws designed to catch prey. It might be an Irritator specimen, and in this case the name will be retired.

Irritator, a dinosaur with a long, thin jaw that might have eaten fish. When paleontologists discovered this dinosaur, they found out that the snout was a fake because it was made of bone and car filler.

Mirischia, a small dinosaur with even smaller arms who hunted lizards.

Santanaraptor, a 6 1/2 foot or 2 meter dinosaur weighing approximately 65 pounds or 30 kilograms who had small, sharp teeth, fingers containing sharp claws, a tail that was off the ground when in motion, and legs designed for sprinting.

Today, Araripe Basin is home to fertile soil, short thorny trees, cacti, and grass.

Cedar Mountain Formation

Approximately 110 million years ago, Utah and Colorado were a floodplain with damp and arid seasons. After heavy precipitation, the rivers would swell and burst water mixed with muddy sediment. Numerous different species of dinosaurs inhabited the floodplain. Fish, turtles, and crocodiles lived among them. The prehistoric organisms which once inhabited the region were discovered in the 1940s. As a result, Cedar Mountain Formation became one of the top North American areas to study dinosaurs from the Early Cretaceous.

A fraction of a backbone that could have been from a brachiosaurus was found in Cedar Mountain Formation.

Here are some of the dinosaurs that were excavated in Cedar Mountain Formation:

Gastiona, who was a part of the anklyosaur (meaning armored dinosaur) family, probably ate ferns, and was covered in spines, the longest being at the shoulders. One bed of bones contains 3,000 bones from possibly 20 of these dinosaurs.

Deinonychus, a carnivorous dinosaur who hunted in teams. They had sharp teeth designed to rip flesh.

Tenontosaurus, a huge herbivorous dinosaur who walked on two legs but dropped on four when eating.

Utahraptor, a dromaeosaur (meaning running lizard) who had long, narrow teeth and a curved claw on each foot that grew to be up to 15 inches or 38 centimeters. It was intelligent and hunted in teams that stalked their prey before attacking it by kicking and biting.

In approximately 20 million years, sediments from prehistoric rivers and pools of the Cretaceous collected and hardened into rocks. Today, these rocks create a formation of high cliffs made of pebbly sandstone the color of rust, mudstone, and siltstone. These different types of rocks faced erosion which turned them into the beautiful canyons, pinnacles, and arches we see today.

Valley of the Moon

Some of the oldest dinosaurs who ever lived can be found in Ischigualasto National Park in northwest Argentina, a.k.a Valley of the Moon. It is a deposit of sandstone and mudstone that first appeared approximately 225 million years ago. During this time, Valley of the Moon was a floodplain located at the edge of the supercontinent Pangea. Today, Valley of the Moon is an arid desert covering 156,000 acres or 63,000 hectares and is north of Mendoza.

More than 100 species of plant have been discovered in Valley of the Moon.

Here are some of the dinosaurs who lived in Valley of the Moon:

Eoraptor, a small dinosaur that was one of the first carnovious dinosaurs. It fed on lizards and minuscule mammal-like creatures.

Pisanosaurus, an herbivorous dinosaur who was approximately the same size as a sheep.

Herrerasaurus, who was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs of it's time. It was named after Victorino Herrera, who was a farmer from Argentina who discovered it in 1958.

Staurikosaurus, an agile carnivorous dinosaur with a long tail, sharp claws, and numerous small teeth.

Ghost Ranch

In New Mexico, there is a fossil quarry that contains numerous specimens of Coelophysis, which is a small, thin dinosaur with a long neck who lived in the late Triassic. It is thought that it's long tail balanced it's weight whenever it moved.

The bone bed containing these specimens is called Ghost Ranch. It is named after a farm close to it and is east of Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Both of these places contain the Chinle Formation. The prehistoric rocks in the formation contain fossils. They were once layers of sediment emitted by rivers. In prehistory, a herd of Coelophysis sank into mud. They stayed there until they were excavated in the late 1940s. Ghost Ranch is located in Chama River Valley and is near Abiquiu, a New Mexican town.

Dr. Edwin Colbert, an American paleontologist who was born in 1905 and died in 2001, discovered more than 500 Coelophysis specimens while he was at Ghost Ranch in 1947.

Dinosaur Provincial Park

Dinosaur Provinical Park is located on the shores of Red Deer River in Alberta, Canada and is south of Wardlow. In 1910, a farmer discovered dinosaur bones on his farmland. As a result, paleontologists began to investigate the farmland in search of more dinosaur bones. So, in 1955, Dinosaur Provinical Park was founded and was named a World Heritage Site in 1979. Approximately 40 species of dinosaurs have been recovered there.

Some of the dinosaurs who have been recovered there are:

Albertosaurus, who had powerful long hind legs and ate Centrosaurus.

Centrosaurus, who was a large dinosaur. A bed of bones containing 50 of them was discovered at Dinosaur Provincial Park and it was predicted that these bones might have been the remains of a storm.

Corythosaurus, a swamp-inhabiting hadrosaur who lived in herds and may have used the numerous nasal passages in it's crest to create sound waves.

Triassic - First Period of The Dinosaurs

First there was bacterium (microscopic fluid satchets made up of sugar, fat, protein, and DNA shielded by a cell membrane), then there were fish that got lungs and fins resembling limbs, then there were amphibians (creatures that inhabit damp areas and breed in the water), then there were reptiles, and then there were dinosaurs.

Triassic

This was what came after the Paleozoic Era which caused 70% of organisms to face extinction. It took 10 million years for the Earth to face complete recovery and when it did, the surviving reptiles evolved. Therapsids were in this group. They were mammal-like reptiles and they marked the introduction of the first authentic mammals. Marine reptiles, flying pterosaurs, and the first dinosaurs were in this group too. The world looked very different because the supercontinents Pangea, Gondwana, and Laurasia did not split yet.

The Triassic was devoid of grass and flowers. Instead, it had ferns and horsetails which were consumed by herbivores. The forests had cycads, conifers, and ginkgoes, which are still alive today. Modern ginkgoes have not changed much.

Some of the dinosaurs that lived during this time were:

Placerias, which was a large, herbivorous mammal-like reptile that faced extinction after the Triassic.

Lariosaurus, which inhabited the more shallow areas of the sea.

Eudimorphodon, a small dinosaur who had a long tail and leather-like wings.

Eoraraptor, which had a long tail, a thin jaw which held minuscule spear-like teeth and probably ate lizards.

Coelophysis, who had a thin, flexible long neck and was a quick predator.

Thecodontosaurus, a 7 foot (2.1 meter) dinosaur who ate plants.

Jurassic - Second Period of The Dinosaurs

The Jurassic brought change in climate because of the splitting of the continents. Ice sheets disappeared and precipitation rates increased. The deserts shrank and as a result, a large percentage of Earth became luxurious forest. New species of dinosaurs rose and mammal-like reptiles faced extinction.

The forests had conifers such as monkey puzzles, ginkgoes, ferns, and cyads. There were also ferns, horsetails, and mosses.

Some of the dinosaurs that lived during the Jurassic were:

Diplodocus, an herbivorous sauropod who had a long neck and peg-like teeth.

Allosaurus, who had large serrated teeth, strong hind legs, and fed on sauropods.

Kentrosaurus, who was a stegosaur. A stegosaur is an herbivorous dinosaur with plates and spikes for defense and heat regulation.

Ichthyosaurus, who was a quick-swimming reptile who used it's minuscule sharp teeth to catch fish.

Liopleurodon, who was a large marine carnivore with long flippers that grew at up to 50 feet or 15 meters long.

Cretaceous - Last Period of The Dinosaurs

The Cretaceous shared the warmth and dampness found in the Jurassic. As old dinosaurs and reptiles faced extinction, new dinosaurs and reptiles evolved. Sauropods became less common and the Earth looked much like it did today. After the Cretaceous, all of the dinosaurs became extinct.

Reasons for extinction include:

A giant meteorite

Too much heat relased into the atmosphere

Not enough babies were produced

Some areas had damp and arid seasons and others had winter and summer. The forests had conifers and cycads as well as oaks and beeches.

Flowers first appeared in the Cretaceous to help with pollination. They ruled the land and encouraged insects to evolve.

Some of the dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous are:

Velociraptor, who hunted in teams and might have had feathers.

Mosasaurus, who had jaws resembling those of a crocodile and limbs resembling paddles.

Spinosaurus, who had long arms and a sail back.

Quetzalcoatlus, who had a 46 foot or 14 meter wingspan which made it the largest flying creature who ever lived.

Ankylosaurus, who had fat, bony spikes and a weighty tail resembling a club.
