Advanced Search Improvements

We made some improvements to the KidzTalk search based on feedback from users. You can now sort search results by: Best Match (default), Newest, Oldest, Most Viewed, or Most Votes. There is also the ability do an exact match, title only match, or require the results to be from a specific user. Using "quotes" is another shortcut to get an exact match. We hope you find it useful to explore KidzTalk content.

New User Search Feature

We added a new feature that lets you use the @ symbol followed by a username in any search box to quickly get to a user profile, similar to notifications. It also searches past names to help you find people. Just start typing whatever part of the name you want to match. Users must have over 1K points to be on the list. You can use it to quickly message a user, view their profile, see their post activity, bio, etc.

Note: Some user profile pages may be slow to load if they have a lot of points/badges, but we are working to speed that up.

You can also search categories by using the / or # sign.

New Follow Post Feature

We have a new feature that we hope many will find useful to find topics of interest to you. It allows you to follow specific threads and get notification alerts even if you did not participate in the topic. When there are any updates to a followed thread, you will see a notification alert. You just need to check the "follow post" checkbox (see image below).

You can also just click the Star located next to all questions in the blue bar to follow a post and get notifications. This also adds it to your favorites list.

Finally, there is a setting in your profile to also get email alerts about any post updates that you follow or if you get an @ mention. The default is off, but you can easily turn it on to get them.

New Online Status Feature

Based on feedback, we released a new feature that tells you if a user was recently seen online. You will see a green dot on their avatar and a status notice in their profile if they are online.

If you don't want your online status shown, there is an option in your account profile to hide it as a setting.

New @ Mention / Notification Feature

We just added a new mention / notification feature. If you type the @ symbol, a list of users will show up and you can select a person to mention in a post, answer, or comment. Just start typing their name or any part of it for a match. You might need to reload your browser for the new update to work.

Once the entry is approved by a moderator, the user mentioned will also get a notification alert so they can take a look at the content when they login to their account. It should help with getting more users interacting. If you find any issues, just let us know.

There are some restrictions that include no more than 25 users can be mentioned in a given post. Users that come up in the list need to have over 1,000 points. If a user is not on the list you can always just type their username directly.

Private Messages Feedback

All registered users should be able to send messages. Please let us know if you have any issues with it. Everything is moderated, so you can't send anything personal or not safe (no bullying, advertising, hurtful, not family-friendly, etc.).

New Feature - Private Messaging

We want to make an official announcement about the new private messaging feature. If you are a registered user and click on the profile of another user, you will see a private message button. Currently, you can only message moderators and staff. Please use it to report any problems or concerns you are having.

We plan to open the beta release to messaging other users. However, it will take some time to fully complete, since we need to keep everyone safe, just like we do with regular KidzTalk posts and answers/comments. We will make an announcement when it is open to more users.

Do you have any questions about the current version? What do you think about getting email notifications when a private message is sent? Should that be optional? What features would you like to see?

Avatars Allowed With 1.5K+ Points

You can now create a KidzTalk Avatar if you have over 1,500 points. Just upload them in your profile section. Of course, no personal pictures are allowed. Let us know if you have any issues with them.

Category Notifications

You can now receive an e-mail notification once your favorite category or subcategory has a new post. This will allow you to know when a person posts something in a favorite category you follow, like a specific club, etc. You can favorite a category by clicking on the heart or star symbol.

Note: If you don't want to receive e-mails for category updates you are following, just uncheck this in your Profile (click on username -> Edit My Profile) listed under mailings.

We added a new feature to KidzTalk. Whenever you have any updates, like a person upvotes a post, comments, or answers one of your posts, you will get an update message. On desktops you will see it as a yellow icon near your username on the top right. Just click on it for details on what was updated. Tablet and mobile phone users may need to click on the gear symbol (upper left) to see them if there is not enough width on your device to fit it. You should find it helpful to quickly see updates related to your posts.
