Why do we wake someone up just to ask them,"are you sleeping?

if someone is sleeping and you try to ask them,"are you sleeping"? Then they'll probably wake up. So you know they were sleeping if they woke up but why do we ask them if they were?

Where is some where hunting is really good, nobody goes to and is in the forest. Needs to be a real place, It is for a story of mine. It is about a girl who goes hunting with her best friend and then they get lost. They have to survive with nothing but the supplies they brought hunting for a month.
