*Chapter One: Rooftop Secrets*

The first time Mia climbed onto the rooftop of Ridgewood High, she hadn’t intended to stay. It was just an escape, a place where the stale air of the hallways couldn’t reach her. She still carried the aftertaste of her parents’ latest argument—a heated exchange about money, college, and her unwillingness to "make practical choices." Art wasn’t practical, they said. Mia didn’t care.

With a sketchbook tucked under her arm, she hoisted herself over the metal railing and found a spot by the aging skylight. Below, the ebb and flow of students filled the hallways, their hurried footsteps muffled but rhythmic. She sketched them as shadows on paper, faceless figures defined by their gestures—a hunched back, a hurried stride, a group clustered in a tight circle.

Her solitude shattered when she heard the sound of a soccer ball thudding against the rooftop’s gravel. Mia froze. She turned, expecting a teacher or some hall monitor to drag her back inside, but instead, she saw Jason.

“Shouldn’t you be practicing?” she said, more snarky than she intended.

Jason smirked, his shaggy blond hair falling into his eyes. “Shouldn’t you be in class?”

Mia considered packing up her things and leaving, but Jason didn’t seem to care that she was there. He kicked the ball against the wall, the sound punctuating the silence between them. Eventually, curiosity got the better of her.

“What are you doing up here?” she asked.

Jason paused, balancing the ball on the edge of his sneaker. “Needed to think. Too loud in the locker room.”

Mia huffed a laugh. “And you thought the rooftop was quiet?”

“Quiet enough,” he said, with a shrug.

That was how it started—two unlikely people, sharing a space they weren’t supposed to, finding a kind of strange, unspoken camaraderie. Over the following weeks, the rooftop became their escape. Jason would practice new tricks with his soccer ball while Mia sketched. He started asking questions about her drawings—“Why do the buildings look like they’re alive?”—and Mia found herself sharing pieces of her dream city, a place she called Luminaris. It was a city where the rules bent to imagination, where skyscrapers floated and parks glowed with bioluminescent trees.

Jason surprised her. Instead of brushing her ideas off as "weird," he leaned into the fantasy. “What if Luminaris had a soccer stadium that floated on water?” he suggested one afternoon, spinning his ball on a finger.

“You mean like...a floating Colosseum?” Mia’s pencil paused over her sketchbook as she thought it through. “Yeah. That could work.”

They started building Luminaris together—not in reality, but on paper. Their sketches became more elaborate, their ideas wilder. Jason would bring notebooks filled with his own drawings, rough and messy, but brimming with creativity. And Mia started to wonder if maybe Jason was more than just Ridgewood’s star athlete.

But neither of them knew how much their rooftop refuge would change their lives—or the school. Because one day, their secret would get out.
