Why do we wake someone up just to ask them,"are you sleeping?

zzz if someone is sleeping and you try to ask them,"are you sleeping"? Then they'll probably wake up. So you know they were sleeping if they woke up but why do we ask them if they were?

NOT SURE MAYBE JUST TO WAKE THEM UP

Well if they don't answer, then it means they're sleeping. I guess that's kinda the logic!
