The Veil
The strangest things are always the ones we know the littlest about. Many fear the unknown, some are excited by it, and others curious. We rarely see the creatures that lurk in the dark abyss on the other side, but they see us. They observe our movements, behaviour, and actions.
They hide and wait. For what? These thoughts circle around our minds, as we grow more and more desperate for the answers to our questions. We have yet to figure out the oddities and anomalies that creep behind the veil.
"What's that?"
Georgie tilted her head so that it pointed to a little cardboard box.
Lazy steel grey eyes met her mud brown orbs. A grunt was heard before another voice spoke,
"Don't know. Maybe it's Sam's."
She frowned at the boy in front of her. Lifting up another box, she sighed.
"Well Henry, why don't you call her down here to help with the boxes?"
She only got another grunt in response before she was left alone with a pile of cardboard.
She headed toward an old and fancy looking door before nudging it open with her foot and stepping inside. Walking through a set of long and twisting corridors, she was met with a much duller and newer looking door. Arriving in the room and sitting the box down she took a look at where she would be staying for the summer.
A queen sized bed with magenta colored sheets lied near a window on the right side of the room. Looking towards the left, she spotted a plain dresser and a vintage looking mirror.
Finally done with unpacking her clothes and other personal items, she made her way down stairs to the kitchen. She noted the paintings that adorned the chipped walls. They all looked to be made from the same artists, since they had a similar style. A black swirl of various other colors sat in the middle of a world that seemed to be made of nothing but lines.
There was no signature, so she couldn't be absolutely sure, but she was pretty positive about her guess.
Dim lights could be seen from a room that held a dining table that could fit up to six and a stove and counter.
Georgie saw her blond friend, Sam, popping some mac & cheese into the microwave.
"Looks like someone's enjoying themselves."
Surprised, Sam jumped back a bit before glaring at the brunette.
"Just gettin' somethin' to eat, aren't you hungry?"
"Yeah, after SOMEONE decided to disappear when we were unpacking."
Mumbling something like "I was busy" or "I was doing something" Georgie rolled her eyes at her friend's excuses before grabbing an apple and sitting herself down at the table.
"Have you seen Henry?"
Shaking her head, the brunette responded,
"Not since he helped me with the boxes."
"Oh, well, tell him there's food down here."
Rolling her eyes once again, she spat out little chunks of apple while attempting, but failing, to talk and chew.
"Kay mom"
Huffing, Sam finished her cheap macoroni and placed the bowl and spoon in the sink.
"I'm going to bed, and don't chew with your mouth opened."
She made a disgusted face before climbing up the creaky stairs to get her beauty rest.
Georgie threw away her core before heading towards her room, which happened to be two doors down from Sam's.
Brushing her teeth and changing into a baggy t-shirt and pajama pants, she flipped off her lights and crawled into bed.
Pulling the sheets over her, the last thing she could remember before entering a dream less sleep was her heavy lids and swirling mirror.
