So for Christmas I got a checkers and chess set and I am new to both. My dad helped teach me the basics of both but then he had to go to work. And my mom forgot how to play. So I need help. If you know any tips or tricks please tell me!!!

I know how to play checkers but it has been a while. On your own for chess tho.
