Chapter Two

The salty ocean wind caressed by face as I sat down by the pier. It had become a habit; something that I couldn't stop doing. That night, the full moon shone down onto the water, and the light that was scattered back shone like crystals. I took a deep breath of the cool air, staring far into the distance of the ocean. I couldn't really help coming here every night. Some things couldn't really change, could they?

The window of my room was facing east towards the ocean. I silently stood by it, cold air from the AC blowing my dark brown hair backwards. I was drowsy, on the verge of falling asleep but then in the distance by the water, there was movement. A person. My eyes widened and my heart lurched, as I decided whether or not I should go tell Melissa. 'No.' I thought as I came to a conclusion. She was already drained from taking care of my baby brother, Andrew, and I didn't want her to take on any more burden. I grabbed my worn jacket from the coat-hanger, and rushed outside. The thoughts in my head were arguing with each other. 'I need to wake up Melissa! It is too dangerous for me to do this alone!' 'No! The person will run away and Melissa will be angry!' I came to a conclusion that I would not tell her but I wouldn't confront the person. When I crouched down in the bushes besides the pier, I could tell something wasn't right about the person. When I squinted at the silhouette, I saw not a human, but something else. Or were my eyes just playing tricks on me?

I don't know why, but the human girl was intriguing. She wouldn't be resting at night, like the others do. Every night I would come, but I didn't really find a reason why I did so. Why did she act the way she did. A part of me wanted to find answers. I swam farther and farther from the depths of the ocean, until my scales scraped along the gritty sand. Slowly, I lifted my head up, trying to not let my gills into the air. It felt cool, and dry.
