Chapter 4
I sat in the car, feet propped up against the chair in front of me. Melissa closed the car door, and took a deep breath. "When we get there, you stay in the car." she said. Melissa was going to a job interview for our parents' old job; working as a marine biologist. When they were still alive, I remember them telling us that one day we will get the job and get to know all the "secrets of the trade." I had asked what the secrets were, my eyes wide with curiosity. My mom and dad had a twinkle in their eyes, and said that one day we would find out. We never did. It supposedly had something to do with a new species, but I couldn't say for sure.
When we reached the Bay-view Lab, it was clear that Melissa was nervous. She stepped out of the car slowly, twisting a strand of hair. "I'll come back in around thirty minutes, okay? I'm sorry you can't come in- it's.." she stammered. "It's their policy." "Alright." I said, confused. With that, she turned away walked farther and farther away.
'Why did she seem unsure about why I shouldn't go in?' I thought. 'Maybe she thought I would cause trouble.' I thought and then frowned. I wasn't really a troublemaker, I was more of a shy and quiet kid. That led to two possible outcomes. Either she was telling the truth but nervous, or she was hiding something from me. Both seemed very likely.

The boat rocked repeatedly, wave after wave. My webbed hands gripped tightly on the side of the boat, and I was looking at the humans. My eyes narrowed, remembering why I was here and what they did to my brother. Then, to my horror, one of them turned around. Cold arms seized my body, and then I heard yelling and felt faint and hissed and clawed and then all was black.
