Description

Nils gives a demonstration and description of the Launch Lab. The experiment is a variation on a ballistic pendulum--instead of a projectile colliding with the pendulum, it is ejected from it. The platform consists of a section of Masonite, a clothes pin, a rubber band, a thread, a match, and is suspended with fishing line. The projectiles are stainless steel and (low density) wood spheres. Students can use a video camera to track the motion of the system after the stored energy of the rubber band is released.

The platform is roughly 30 cm long. The steel ball is roughly 200 grams.
