Different types of magnets can have a big impact on visualizing magnetic fields. In this project, I investigate how different types of magnets affect how their magnetic fields can be visualized. This is important to know because different types of magnets are used in many places where magnetic fields need to be understood, and visualizing magnetic fields helps to understand them.
My question is “How does the type of magnet affect how its magnetic field can be visualized?”. My hypothesis is: “I think that the neodymium magnet will have the largest magnetic field, the samarium cobalt magnet will also have a large magnetic field, and the ceramic magnet will be moderate compared to the rare earth magnets (neodymium and samarium cobalt) because my research shows that neodymium magnets are the strongest available magnets, samarium cobalt magnets are made out of highly magnetic materials, and ceramic magnets were found to have a moderate magnetic strength compared to the other two magnets.”
In my experiment, I used iron filings to visualize the neodymium magnet, samarium cobalt magnet, and ceramic magnet. First, you place each magnet in a cup and label the cups with the magnet’s name. Next, place the neodymium magnet under a sheet of paper then sprinkle iron filings on top of the paper. Tap gently. Repeat the process with samarium cobalt magnets and ceramic magnets, separately.
After analyzing the results, I found out that my hypothesis was correct. The neodymium magnet had the largest magnetic field, the samarium cobalt also had a large magnetic field, and the ceramic magnet had the smallest magnetic field out of them all but its magnetic field was still moderate.
The information gathered from this experiment is important to know because magnets are used in many places and magnetic fields need to be understood in these places. For example, magnets are used inside smartphones to create audio effects. If engineers didn’t understand magnetic fields, they wouldn’t be able to create a phone that plays sound.
