Design and synthesis of a minimal bacterial genome
http://science.sciencemag.org/content/351/6280/aad6253
"A goal in biology is to understand the molecular and biological function of every gene in a cell. One way to approach this is to build a minimal genome that includes only the genes essential for life."
Creation of a Bacterial Cell Controlled by a Chemically Synthesized Genome
http://science.sciencemag.org/content/329/5987/52.full
"We report the design, synthesis, and assembly of the 1.08-mega-base pair Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI-syn1.0 genome starting from digitized genome sequence information and its transplantation into a M. capricolum recipient cell to create new M. mycoides cells that are controlled only by the synthetic chromosome."
Synthetic Life Dies Without Mysterious Genes

Five years after creating the first self-replicating, synthetic bacterial cell, biotech researcher and entrepreneur J. Craig Venter and colleagues have figured out the little guy can live a full and reproductive life with just 473 of its genes, a miniature biological code smaller than any known replicating cell found in nature.
