Description
In this home science experiment for kids, we synthesize a beautiful white precipitate of magnesium carbonate using non-toxic compounds that everyone has at home. This is the perfect experiment to introduce your entire family to how amazing chemistry is!
Everyone will learn 3 types of chemical reactions, and all about solubility, precipitates, and filtrates. And when you are done, you can use your new compound hand chalk for rock climbing or gymnastics!
Bonus experiment #1:
- Calculate the mass before and after heating the sodium bicarbonate (it should lose around 1/3rd its mass)
Bonus experiment #2:
- Heat the contents of Jar#1 containing magnesium bicarbonate on a stove to near boiling until it decomposes into a precipitate of magnesium carbonate
Watch our channel for more chemistry experiments at home, and also experiments for the lab.
ChemTalk is a non-profit dedicated to making chemistry fun and easy to learn, and to dispelling the negative connotations associated with chemistry.
