Description

In light of the recent press regarding this shark, I'm releasing some select footage of this encounter that occurred off on July 9th, 2023. I have over 18 minutes of footage of this little creature. You can read the corresponding research paper in the scientific journal, Environmental Biology of Fishes. The link is below.

I believe the highest likelihood the images in this video shows a newborn shark. While determining the exact age of the shark is nearly impossible, there are several key observations that support this being a newborn.

The shape of the fins, especially the dorsal fin is a major clue. The size of the shark, approximately 1.5m long, & the white membrane like material sloughing off. The paper suggests this is a uterine milk coating still adhered to the sharks body.

The appearance of the shark looks nearly identical to known deceased neonates in the record.

While the shark is unique, we proposed a skin disorder could also be the explanation for the unique white coating that is sloughing off. However, this explanation does not take into account the unique sharks morphology. Specifically the round fins and most vital, the round dorsal fin. When compared to existing images of deceased neonates on record, the dorsal fin matches up precisely.
