Influenced by Christopher Columbus, several Spanish explorers sailed to the new world, seeking prosperity, most of them were hostile toward the native. Ponce De Leon was searching for a legendary fountain of youth, Which he sought after futetily. However, his quest made him the first Spanish man to reach that mainland of North America. The land he discovered became known as Florida probably because of many flowers blooming there. Francisco Coronado, who was another explorer, was in search of the mythical seven cities of Gold. He never found them, however his men discovered the Grand Canyon. The Spanish explorers are recognized for establishing the first permanent European Settlement in America St. Augustine, Florida. While this settlement started as a small fort, it is now a city that is still around today.
