My friend doesn't understand LGBTQIA+ at all. She didn't even know what the word gay meant until today. Another friend, who has just come out to her, had to take so long to explain that people don't just have to use she/her or he/him pronouns. They can use neopronouns or they/them pronouns, a combination of different sets of pronouns.
I don't know how I'll be able to come out to her. She hasn't sent anyone hate, but I remember when I mentioned two characters in a book I love, both girls, kissing, she said, "That's weird." I asked her why and she said:
"Because."
It bothers me so much! I could tell she looked confused when I explained different pronouns to her. And when I mentioned seeing a progress pride flag on the main character's sister's computer in a graphic novel, she didn't even know what a pride flag was.
I've had to explain gender and sexuality to her a lot, and I don't know if I should keep testing the waters or drop hints about my sexuality. Anyway, I asked her to guess my crush. She guessed a bunch of girls and said, "Yeah, hahaha, I know it won't be them."
Even though she did guess right one of the times, I didn't want to deal with hate or shock or anything else.
