Oh, I understand how awkward that can be. Just remember, if you're really friends, you'll be happy for each other no matter what happens. Don't let a boy get between something so much more valuable- true friendship. In this case, I suggest you be sort of a wingman/woman. Talk to the guy, perhaps saying "_____ SOOOOO likes you, why don't you ask her out?", or suggest helping him write a note, so he can express his true feeling without the awkward feeling of saying it out loud.
