My fault. All my fault.
I can't feel the pain as badly as the two twins, but Asia was my responsibility to keep safe. But now she's gone and my mission has crumbled. Never again will I be trusted with a life, never again will be trusted with anything.
She's dead. She was almost like, like a daughter or a younger sister, someone I could help, even if I didn't know her very well. Asia Abernathy-Lovegood is dead and it's all my fault, and I will never be able to pay for it.
A/N: Toby's POV for this next section.
Dead. Not by my hand, but by the person we all swore to protect her from.
I walked through the safe house the next morning, shocked with grief. Asia had once again thrown herself to save someone, a selfless but stupid act. Everyone knew Hazyl was expendable, that was the reason why she was there, but, Asia didn't see her that way. Asia saw Hazyl as a friend, as someone whose life was to be treasured. Better her own life than another's, that was her reasoning.
What was her motive? When she saved Lucas Malfoy from my curse, it was love. When she saved Hazyl, it was love as well, a platonic love we had all come to share, excluding me and Lucas. Maybe it was also because she knew she was gonna die anyway, so why not die for someone instead of because of a curse?
Lucas was in the pale blue room, his head smashed in a pillow and his forehead, which protruded over, was red. I took a breath, walked in, and sat down beside him.
"Tom?" said Lucas, but then he said harshly, "Oh, Caim."
"Yeah," I said fiercely. "Me. Listen, it's not just you who is gr-"
"Tom says he thinks she's alive," said Lucas, gritting his teeth.
"I don't know about that. It's best to just assume she's dead." I said a little kindly, but the words stabbed me in my heart. Dead. Gone, never to come back, and never to smile again, never to light up the room with her laugh or make me chuckle with her smarts and her teasing.
"But if she's alive-"
"She's NOT!" I yelled. "No one has survived Handison. He killed Wren, one of the best witches in the world, without breaking a sweat!" I stomped across the room so I was away from Lucas. "She's not alive. You're a child for believing she is."
"I may be a child, but I have hope, even if there's only a little bit!" Lucas said. He was still grieving, I could tell.
"You're a child, and always have been!" I screamed. As I whipped out my wand, Hazyl burst through the door and grabbed my wrist. She hissed at me to put my wand down, and I looked at her wet eyes. The brown in her irises were swimming with tears. I noticed a little bit of green on the outside of her pupils.
"Stop!" Hazyl said. Willow came in at that exact moment, Tom close behind.
I started screaming again as I reached for my wand in Hazyl's hands. She blocked me with her body, holding the wand behind her back, so I couldn't reach it despite being taller. "ASIA IS DEAD, AND THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO!" I shrieked, "AND FOR THE RECORD, IF SHE WAS ALIVE, I WOULD KILL HER ANYWAY BECAUSE SHE'S MAKING US FIGHT, AND-"
Hazyl slapped me hard upside the head. "Listen," she said, her voice shaking, " We are all sad. We all liked Asia, in some cases loved, but we need to keep calm and focus on protecting Tom and Lucas."
"SCREW TOM AND LUCAS!" I shouted, then assumed a mock voice that sounded like Hazyl. "'We have to protect them, they're all we have left, and oh, in the meantime, we won't look for Asia, and leave her if she's really alive, because we know she's all dead anyway!'" I started to breath heavily. "Good bye, guys. I'm DONE. Imma go look for her myself."
Hazyl grasped my collar. Lucas made a twitch, Tom made a noise, Willow made a move to stop her, but Hazyl couldn't be stopped. She pulled me back, and I felt anger rippling in her fingers as she said, "Toby, no one is going anywhere. You are staying here."
"Why?" I said, "No one really wants me here." I pointed to Lucas. "He hates me for loving Asia and hurting her," I pointed to Tom and Willow in turn, " Tom hates me for hating Lucas, and Willow just hates me for what I am. And you," I said, my lip curling as I grinned at Hazyl, "You feel entitled to keep me in line."
"I do! So stay!"
"If you promise me something."
"What?"
I thought for a moment and said, "Well, you could admit something. Do you like me at all?"
Hazyl said, "As a friend, Toby. I've told you before. If I have to bind you and put you downstairs, I swear I will do it. You cannot leave!" Hazyl screamed. As I made a move towards her and everyone made collective gasps, she waved her wand and I felt my limbs seize up, and I fell down.
"C'mon, guys." Hazyl said to Willow and the others. "He's reached his limit."
A/N: Asia's POV.
"Huh?"
"Wake up, little kitty." said a voice. I looked up, and a old man was chained to the wall beside me. He was obviously deranged, with torn robes. My clothes, a T-shirt and leggings, were scuffed but not damaged. I pulled against the restraints. "Don't try," the man said, "I already have, ha, ha, ha..." Dried blood coated his shackles.
"Who are you?" I said in a strained voice.
"No one of importance... ha...just your fellow prisoner...someone else to kill..."
"Kill?" I said, and he smiled a toothy grin.
"Lambs to the slaughter, yes... This evening, in fact, we'll be lead to the slaughterhouse... after they've done what they want with us... ha...death, pain, suffering, seen it all... seen it all..."
Tom, Lucas, Willow, Hazyl, Toby, Wren. Where were they?
"Has anyone else come here?"
"No, just you, a little girl who can turn into an unlucky catty... a kittypuss with a curse... and a useful... a useful talent..." he laughed slowly again. "Ah... ha... ha... I see them all... killed, and it's fun to see... until it's you... even then, no one cares.... but oh well.... i'll just laugh, and I'll feel better...."
I pulled on my shackles again. "Wands?" I said.
He shook his head. "No wands... haven't seen one in years... they break em and sell em… no way out, little girlie, just death... death is the only escape..." As his last words went out of his mouth, the door swung open with a clank. A guard pulled the man out, unhooking his shackles from the wall so they were still connected. They went out of sight and I heard the man laughing at first, and then a scream. I shivered.
It was me next. "We have done all we need with you. Bye, bye."
The guard raised a wand, and green flashed. Everyone in my life flashed before my eyes. Mum, Hermione, Lucas, Ace, Toby, Abby, Lizzy, Llyr, Tom, Hazyl, Willow, Wren, Draco and his wife, Scorpius, Lulumoon, Kuso, Will, the orphanage bullies, everyone.
And with my last breath, my world ended.
A/N: The Guard POV
"She's dead," I said. "What do you wanna do with her, Master?" I said, referring to Handison.
"In a few days, use the spell we created."
"Which one?"
With a grin, Handison said, "Meet Wren 2.0." The woman he called Wren stepped from behind him, eyes glazed. "Use the enhanced version of the Inferius curse. Bring her back. Use her against her friends. That's the only sure way to get them all."
"Why do you want the Malfoy twins? And Asia?"
"Tom and Asia have dark magic beyond even me. I must have it. As for Lucas, I think it would be nice just to torture him. Reason enough?" Handison said, and smiled. "If it's not, you can take their place."
I shook my head, and approached the body.
